How to Track Your Progress as a Dancer

It’s normal to feel frustrated sometimes, especially when you’re striving to become a better dancer for your dream team. You’ve attended dance classes (those preparing for an audition), sought professional guidance, and danced with people better than you.

So, how do you know that you’re on the right track? The fact that you’re here only means you care about improving. In this article, you’ll discover some ways to measure your progress as a dancer.

Set personal goals.

There are many dance goals you can set, depending on what you want to improve on. Aspiring dancers, for example, can set the goal of picking up choreography faster. This will greatly boost your chances of passing the first round and making your dream team.

Learning a new dance style is also another great goal. Aside from Jazz and Hip-Hop, which are common in the world of professional cheerleading, you can explore other genres like ballet and tap dancing.

Take videos of yourself.

Unless you have someone who can give you feedback regularly, it helps to take videos of yourself — and we mean lots of videos — at home. Look out for mistakes like not connecting with the music, stiff movements, poor posture, and rushing the moves. Consider this an opportunity to learn and be honest with yourself. Work harder on strengthening your weaknesses.

Document your dance journey.

Social media has become a popular place for sharing anything, including people’s dance journeys. If you’re interested in gathering random feedback or reactions (and you can handle anything without becoming defensive), then maybe you should try sharing your talent on Instagram or TikTok.

Look for critiques.

On top of taking videos (which are really convenient), consider getting feedback from a few selected people you trust. Of course, these people have to be experts (or at least have more experience than you) in dancing. They can include a dance instructor, dance friends, and members of a dance community you belong to.

Be proud of yourself no matter what.

No matter what, see the good in yourself. Believe in yourself. It’s easier to keep progressing if you feel optimistic. If being inspired fuels you to keep pushing, then seek sources of inspiration such as dance blogs, YouTube channels, books, and communities. As you develop your dance skills, don’t forget to share your talent with others — and even offer help!
