Learn How To Dance At Home With These 9 Tips

Becoming a professional cheerleader isn’t just about maintaining a beautiful and fit body - dancing also makes up 60% of the career. That’s why every aspiring cheerleader is encouraged to join a local dance clinic prior to the auditions.

But with the pandemic still going on, it’s sad to say the option is unavailable. However, you don’t need to worry because you can still hone your dancing skills at home! Here’s a list of how you should do it.

1. Practice a dance you’ve already learned

If you just got back into dancing or this is your first time learning as a pro cheerleader candidate, your body might not be quite adapted to complex routines. Practice a dance you learned before. It will help with updating your kinesthetic coordination.

2. Select the dance style you want to showcase for the auditions

Professional cheerleading dances are a combination of different styles and routines. Every dance style will score points in different criterias of judging as well. So, pick the style that you aim to learn. It can be jazz dancing, hip-hop, or Bollyhop (Bollywood and hip hop).

Watch a video of these different dance styles and choose the one that you can do with ease.

3. Learn the dance’s techniques before the routine

Techniques are elements of a dance style such as hand placement and foot positioning. Routine is a full dance that uses all the techniques of the dance. Learning dancing techniques prevents you from falling or sustaining injuries. So it’s very important to learn them first.

When you’ve mastered all the techniques in a dance, that’s the time to learn the full routine and polish it to perfect execution. You can also choose to learn from other dancing techniques as well if you want to showcase a unique dance for the auditions.

4. Schedule a time for practice

Aim to practice your routine at least thrice a week. You can schedule your practices on the weekends and once during weekdays after a light workout. What’s important is you remember your routines well and keep your body in a flexible condition.

5. Pick the right video to learn from

Choose a dance video that is clear and gives a full view of the instructor’s body. Listen to the video’s audio as well. Make sure that the video you choose has good quality audio so you can follow the instructions and beats clearly.

6. Set a designated dancing space

Prevent injuries or damage in your home by practicing in a wide space. You can choose to practice in the backyard. If your place is small like an apartment complex, make a plan on how to move furniture to give more space. You can also practice on the rooftop.

7. Learn from the right instructor

To really learn well on how to execute your desired dance, choose the expert for it. Search online for instructors who specialize in that particular dancing style. Make sure they can teach the techniques and good choreography.

8. Practice deliberately

Get the most of your dance practice and classes by following these tips. Put your phone away while training and eliminate all distractions. If you’re easily distracted from other people or surrounding noises, practice alone in a secluded space.

9. Record yourself and analyze your progress

There’s no better way to check how well you’re doing other than a 3rd-person perspective. But that doesn’t mean you need an external opinion. Just record your full routine execution with your phone or camera.

Make sure these devices can record clear videos and capture your whole body. Then, watch yourself and look for small mistakes to improve on.

Remember to warm up and stretch first before your practices. Eat a healthy meal for energy and stay hydrated by drinking a lot of water. Have fun as you practice. Cheers!
