Stay Fit Through the Holidays with These Pro Cheer Tips

This time of the year can be a challenging time for many people, especially aspiring professional cheerleaders. You’ve got a few months to go before the audition season. So how are your preparation in terms of fitness? I hope you’re doing a great job so far and seeing progress. If not, it’s not too late. And since holidays can trigger those unnecessary cravings, you need tips to stay on track. Here are my six secrets to staying fit and motivated.

1. Make morning workouts happen.

You’ll probably have a busier schedule than usual. Whether you’re preoccupied with school or office projects or grocery shopping, you need to stay active. Don’t skip your workouts. Doing them early in the morning, before breakfast, guarantees that you won’t have to worry about squeezing them in for the rest of the day. Plus, morning workouts fire up your metabolism.

2. Prioritize a good night’s sleep.

When sleep is scarce, your body finds it hard to lose weight because your stress hormone cortisol slows down your metabolism. It’s even harder to workout with an obvious lack of energy. And those sugar cravings… they sure do increase when you’re tired. Maintain your regular sleep schedule. Have a bedtime routine -- Take a warm shower. Listen to calm music. Dab lavender oil on your pillow.

3. Book a hotel with a gym or use a body weight fitness app.

If you’re going to travel this holiday season, choose a hotel that has a gym or pool so that you can get a quick workout in the morning. If this isn’t possible, a great alternative would be to download an app that lets you workout anywhere, and requires minimal space and zero equipment.

4. Limit your alcohol consumption.

The straightforward answer: Yes, alcohol messes with your holiday fitness goals because of the extra calories. When you consume more of these calories than you burn, you’re going to gain weight. Moderation means that you are allowed to get only one drink per day, and that’s it.

5. Don’t sit for long periods of time.

Do your best to keep moving, even when it isn’t time for a workout. There are many ways to get off the couch and do something more productive. Take your dog out for a walk. Go window shopping. Play with your kid. When you are on the phone, stand up! Take a fifteen-minute walk after you eat lunch.

6. Feed your mind with inspiring stuff.

The more tempted you are to procrastinate or slack off during the holidays, the more you should tune into fitness motivational content. Whether it’s watching workout videos to learn new techniques, reading a pro cheer audition book, or listening to a health and fitness podcast, you will be reminded of your long-term goal.

You see, holidays don’t have to give you reasons to fall back into unwanted habits. These simple tips should help you stick with your fitness plan. Don’t forget to eat healthily too!!! Grab the opportunity to prepare delicious yet healthy holiday meals. Enjoy the holidays. :)
