The Best Pro Audition Prep Advice? Be Your Own Cheerleader!
This is as cliché as it can be.
Let me repeat it, and a little louder this time: BE YOUR OWN CHEERLEADER!
I’m pretty sure you have heard this time and time again because this statement applies to so many facets of our lives. Think about school, work, family life, personal goals…
And now, quite literally, we’ll use this on you as an aspiring pro cheerleader.
I’ve known people with tendencies to be hard on themselves. They dwell so much on flaws and weaknesses and fail to give themselves credit for their strengths.
Sometimes, we’re afraid that we’ll come off as arrogant to other people as we give ourselves that much-needed boost, but truth be told, whether we do that or not, not everyone in our circle will support our dreams. So it’s high time that we appreciate ourselves for the victories that we have, be it big or small.
Talk kindly to and about yourself
We often fail in this area because we’re always waiting for other people to validate whatever good thing we see in ourselves. Not to mention, we all have that inner critic who always has side comments. Shoo the negativity away. Don’t be shy. Be your own best friend by being the first to encourage and motivate yourself. Say good things about yourself and be generous on it.
Affirm yourself
Have a pep talk! Whenever you wake up in the morning (and really, just every time you feel like you need it), stand in front of the mirror and tell yourself:
“I am beautiful. I am strong. I can do it. I will be a pro cheerleader.”
You believe what you say repeatedly, and remember, this is you telling the world of what you are and what you’re capable of.
Say “thank you”
This is for when others compliment you. There will be people who will see your strengths and appreciate you. There will be those who only see your weaknesses, and while some may pull you down, there will be those who will continue to celebrate with you despite knowing your flaws. Appreciate those who do.
Write about the things you are grateful for
Now, this is for yourself. Every day, write down things that you appreciate about yourself. Maybe you did a routine flawlessly or you hit your desired weight goal or as simple as your hair wasn’t frizzy at all the whole day, write those down. Sometimes, when we’re having a far from a perfect day, we feel demotivated. Journaling things you are grateful for is a nice way to have something to look back on that can tell you good days are just around the corner.
Stop looking over the fence
Admiring people can be motivating, but the constant comparison to the point that you’re envious and you’re beating yourself up for not doing the same is a no-no. Learn to focus on your journey, whether it’s other people who are comparing you or it’s you who’s doing it.
Celebrate success
Count your accomplishments. No one is stopping you. Never belittle your achievements. Be generous to yourself when it comes to saying “job well done” to yourself. Pat yourself on the back every single time.
Reward yourself
After some hard work, please take the time to breathe and relax. Be it taking a lazy afternoon walk, reading a book, spending quiet time in a coffee shop or soaking in a warm bath, do something nice for yourself.
If you don’t know yet, self-love is the best kind of love. It’s not selfish. It’s empowering when used the right way, so go ahead and cheer yourself on!
