What Is Circuit Training and What Are Its Benefits?
Sticking to a fitness program for a long time is hard, especially if it causes you boredom or takes a lot of your time during waking hours. If you’ve been in a situation where you failed to complete an exercise routine or you didn’t exercise at all because of a hectic schedule, you might want to try circuit training.
We understand that aspiring and current pro cheerleaders are often short on time and can feel tired in the middle of a workout session. This is why in this article, we’re introducing circuit training and the various ways it can help you fulfill all your career, personal, education, and pro cheer responsibilities.
What is Circuit Training?
Circuit training is a form of body conditioning workout that combines six sets of exercises or more. In between the exercises, once you’ve completed a specific amount of reps, you’re required to rest for a short period before going into the next set.
Other than that, circuit training could also come in the form of time limits. Simply speaking, you don’t need to achieve a specific amount of reps per exercise set. Instead, you’ll do as many reps as you can until the timer’s countdown is over.
Why Use Circuit Training in Your Workout Program?
1. Offers a full-body workout
A circuit training program is usually created with a combination of exercises that target all of your body’s muscle groups. This is a great benefit for pro cheerleading because you’ll be burning fat all over your body. It’s unlike other training programs where you’ll focus on one muscle group, which likely leads to asymmetrical results.
2. It’s time-efficient
Because circuit training forces you to take very short breaks and finish a routine within 10 minutes, it’s a great go-to fitness routine if your schedule is tight. Pro cheerleaders are known to be full-time mothers, career women, business owners, and students. By using circuit training in your workout program, you’ll be able to stay fit even if you have plenty of things to do in your daily life.
3. Improves exercise commitment
The problem with other workout programs, especially those with long resting periods, is that they usually cause the trainee to be bored in between the sets. This situation also makes it hard for a person to stick to the workout program. Whereas circuit training forces you to focus on completing the sets as soon as possible. Your mind won’t have the time to wander, which usually happens when you get bored.
Example of a Circuit Training Routine
Every set within a circuit training routine should be short, moderately intense, and transition smoothly into another without straining your muscles. Take this video as an example. Notice around 1:41 to 3:42 that Pamela Reif does a pushup variety, transitions into a plank, and then goes back to pushups. It’s not hard to do and your muscles won’t feel exhausted while completing the series of sets.
Important tips to follow when doing circuit training: Don’t rush your reps and perform them all with the correct form. By remembering these rules, you won’t get easily exhausted during the routine and you’ll feel energized afterward.
