Why You're Not Enjoying Your Workouts (And What You Can Do)
Are you in a state right now where you no longer find joy in being active? It’s no big deal. Being lazy in your fitness program is normal and a lot of people experience this as well. A good example of this case are people who apply for a gym membership in January. This results in gyms being crowded with new members due to New Year’s fitness resolutions.
As the month progresses into February, the members start to disappear one by one until the gym is only left with a few loyal patrons. Why is this so? Some are working out with the wrong mindset. Others have bad trainers or partners.
In the case of aspiring and current pro cheerleaders like yourself, lazing out of fitness isn’t a choice. You need to keep your body fit and toned for your career. The tips you’ll find below will be helpful in making you stick to your work out program whether you’re motivated or not.
1. Think of the benefits that are more than just losing weight
Most of the time, we associate exercise with weight loss. That’s what makes us think that we should only workout when we’ve gained extra weight. When you look at yourself in the mirror and feel content with your body size, you’ll treat exercising as an unnecessary routine.
But, working out has more benefits than just losing weight. Here are some positive effects:
- Decreases the risk of various diseases and bad health conditions.
- Increases longevity.
- Improves sleep.
- Improves sex life.
- Improves social life.
2. Realize you don’t have to love it wholeheartedly
If you don’t enjoy working out, you don’t need to feel the enjoyment to be active. Treat exercise as a need or a routine. The key is to automate the activity, don’t wait for motivation to fire you up. To do this, you have to pick a schedule for working out and stick to it until it becomes a habit.
3. Re-label the word “exercise”
When you’ve really grown to detest working out, you’ll find yourself groaning at hearing or seeing the word “exercise”. To change your perspective of the activity, re-write the word “exercise” on all your planners, alarm, schedulers, post-it notes, etc. into “being active”, “feeling healthy”, or “fitness duty”.
4. Don’t limit yourself to one fitness environment
Do you hate working out in a sweaty gym? Does the idea of sharing a fitness space demotivate you? The answer is simple, exercise at home or at the park. If you don’t like working out alone, then apply for a gym membership. Invite a friend or make some.
5. Get addicted to the endorphin release
One good reason you don’t enjoy being active is that you don’t exercise at all. Remember, working out triggers the release of endorphins in your brain. This hormone is responsible for making you feel good. The only way for you to enjoy working out is to really get active.
6. Change or modify your workout regime
Some workout programs are so tedious that they leave a person exhausted at the end of each session. Not only do these fitness regimes consume so much time and energy, but they also discourage the person from completing the program.
Assess yourself if you’re in this situation. If you are, you might want to shorten your workout time and increase the intensity of your routines.
7. Take breaks
Muscle soreness is the result of repeatedly doing heavy and intense exercises with very short rest between sets and no recovery days. You’ll end up idle, paralyzed, and traumatized from the pain.
It is wise to have enough resting durations between sets so you can catch up to your breath while working out. Don’t forget to have resting days and active recovery days to allow your muscle tissues to heal as well.
8. Get a new coach
Some personal trainers don’t match well with their trainees. You might be the kind of lady who prefers to have a soft-spoken motivator over someone who screams in your ear like a drill sergeant.
The same goes for a fitness buddy. If your workout partner doesn’t motivate you, drags you down, or isn’t fun to exercise with, then it’s time to find somebody else.
Living a life of fitness should be a fun endeavor. The same goes for pursuing and living with a pro cheer career. By the moment you feel that following your workout program is hard, take a moment to pause and adjust your training situation to be comfortable for you. What’s important is, you’ll keep on working out and avoid jeopardizing your pro cheer dream.
