3 Great Pieces of Advice from Veteran Pro Cheerleaders You Should Listen to

Researching online about pro cheer audition preparation tips is good. What’s even better is heeding the advice of women who have been or are currently in the NFL or NBA pro cheerleading business. With that said, we’ve put together three lessons from current and alumni pro cheerleaders that you can use as a guide throughout your audition preparation.

1. Research in advance what the judges of the team you’re auditioning are looking for

GeNienne Samuels was a pro cheerleader for the Washington Redskins for eight years and the Washington Wizards for three years. In one of her YouTube videos, she was asked, “What's the number one thing judges are looking for at auditions?”

She answered with, “It really does depend on the team, it depends on the judges, it depends on the openings for that team, and what slots they’re trying to fill. But the best answer I can give you is that the judges, the coaches, the directors, they’re looking for the ‘full package’”.

When announcements for auditions are released, read each page of the squad’s website thoroughly. Better yet, ask people who have connections to the team you’re auditioning for. They might say they’re in need of an auditionee who knows tumbles and stunts.

2. Prove your naysayers wrong

Victoria Kalina is an alumnus of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. During an interview in training camp season 14, she was asked by one of the judges, “During the last auditions, you took a lot of heat on social media. Just curious how you handled that?

In which Victoria answered happily, “I did get some direct messages that were not the loveliest. And it took a while for me to not have that self-doubt that I wasn’t good enough. But, I wanna prove them all wrong. Those negative comments, I use them as fuel. I want to show everyone that this is my goal and I’m going to achieve it.”

She made the team afterward. The lesson? When the whole world is against you, you only have two options: Give up and admit defeat or take the challenge and focus on winning.

3. Never stop learning to become a great dancer

Another DCC alumnus, Rachel Gill wrote in an article, “Not everyone learns choreography at the same pace, and some of my teammates who were veterans would still devote extra time each week to learn and practice new routines before rehearsal just to make sure they had it down. You have to learn what works for you. And when you’re a rookie, the only way you will succeed in your first year cheering is to manage your time wisely to make sure you are always prepared.”

If veteran and current cheerleaders still devote their time to learning their routines, you should do the same as you prepare for the auditions. Don’t be complacent after memorizing the given choreography, keep on practicing until you can perform it in a quality that will impress the judges.

With all these helpful tips from the pros, we hope that you’ll crush your upcoming dream team audition. We’ll keep you updated on the teams that will release their audition details once the 2022 NFL and NBA season starts.
