How to Overcome the Fears That Are Holding You Back From Pursuing Your Dreams
Fear is a powerful emotion. It can also be used as a powerful tool to determine your success in reaching your ambition. Fear can either paralyze you from taking action or it can be overcome to be used for fuel in fighting harder battles ahead.
To achieve pro cheerleading success, the latter should happen. You must overcome your fear to succeed in the auditions and perform efficiently in the arena. Here’s how.
1. Be inspired by others
Look at other women who had ambitions of losing weight. Look at other women who dreamed of getting an athletic body. Look at the shy pro cheerleaders who managed to shine under the arena spotlight.
At one point, they were like you. Scared of change or were scared to act but they overcame their fears anyways and became successful dancers. If they did it, so can you.
2. Remind yourself of the benefits of achieving your dream
Sometimes, you mindlessly think about the negative what-ifs of the audition process and not the positive scenario once you make the team. Stop thinking about these negative scenarios. They’ll only poison your mind into quitting. Instead, remember why you started in the first place.
Ask yourself: “What made me want to be a pro cheerleader?” This will help you refocus on giving your all during audition preparation.
3. Recognize your fears
You cannot ignore your fears. They will always be there at the back of your head and trying to bury them will still affect the way you pursue your ambitions. The worst part is, you won’t notice when it happens.
Recognizing your fears helps you backtrack once you make impulsive decisions that are detrimental to your pro cheer plans. One good example of this scenario is abandoning your dream of becoming a pro cheerleader due to hearing some kind of negative gossip.
4. Write them down
Once you recognize what your fears are, you should write them down and memorize them well. Writing your fears down makes it easier to identify that you’re in a state of panic. It also helps you create plans on what to do once you’re feeling scared.
5. Take a time out
When you’re scared of thinking about failing the auditions, stop everything that you’re doing and collect your thoughts. Review the battle plan before continuing. Better yet, follow the tips from #1 and #2 during your time out.
6. Breathe through moments of panic
Don’t fight your fear or any feelings of tension. Don’t distract yourself. Don’t let your fear throw you off focus. Aspiring and current pro cheerleaders commonly experience this on their first audition and arena performance.
I’ve heard that some even backed out due to stage fright. Instead, take focused deep breaths in the locker room. Focus on the dance routine you alone and the squad practiced. Focus on reaping the benefits of being a pro cheerleader.
7. Start small
Overcoming your fear cannot be done overnight. It cannot be done with a single solution. You can only get over your fears through small steps. If you’re scared to lift heavy weights but want to be stronger, then start to overcome that fear by lifting light dumbbells.
Then, progress to lifting medium to heavier equipment. Adopt the spirit of facing challenges. Seek thrill in doing difficult tasks. Better yet, get addicted to the high of doing what you thought was impossible.
8. Have faith
Fear is caused by the lack of trust within yourself. If you never trusted yourself to be a good dancer, then you’ll never be a good dancer. But if you believe you have the aptitude for learning how to dance like a pro cheerleader then you’ll exactly learn how to dance like a pro cheerleader.
Now ask yourself these questions, “What’s the worst thing that can happen once I’ve overcome my fears?” and “What can go wrong if I become confident yet end up failing?” You know the answer to those questions. It’s not the end of the world. So stick to your pro cheer plans. Break free from the shackles of your fear. Then, take a step forward, execute your plans, and never ever look back.
