How to Change the Way You Feel About the Auditions

Auditioning for pro cheer teams can be nerve-wracking. You’ll undergo a stricter judging criterion while performing in front of a panel, crowd, pro cheer squad coach, current squad members, and other pro cheer auditionees.

Sometimes you feel like backing out because of that thought. Not mainly because you’re scared of crowds, but because you feel like the auditions would be a court trial and you’re a defendant. However, there are techniques on how to overcome this nervousness.

The first technique is by changing what you think of the audition. When you successfully do this, you’ll be able to enjoy your audition prep and get excited for the big day. Check out these tips.

1. Reframe your perspective of the audition

You might feel scared and nervous at the thought of showcasing your dance and being judged in front of a panel. The truth is, there’s nothing you can do about it. But if you let your fear and anxiety take over, your performance will be ruined. Instead, just let a little seriousness go and focus on dancing while having fun.

2. Take the experience as a privilege

Like having no choice but to be judged by a panel, the panel also has no choice but to see you perform. When it’s your time to shine, take the stage and command it. From your introduction to exit, aim to be as graceful as you can. Be happy that for a few minutes, the entire building has its eyes on you.

3. Rehearse in front of your friends and family

There's no better confidence booster than winning the approval of those you care for the most. So perform your showcase routine in front of your partner, family, or close friends. When you’re done, ask them “So how was it?” If they like your performance, take it as an inspiration, and if they make suggestions, take them as a lesson.

4. Keep on exercising to release stress

As the audition day goes near, your feeling of nervousness compounds. The best way to calm your nerves during these moments is to keep on working out. It’s even better to add intensity. When you’re done, you’ll experience an endorphin high. Use that moment to surround yourself with happy thoughts and make tip #1 easier.

5. Be prepared as much as you can

One reason why actors and athletes face fear before an audition and competition is because they think that they aren’t ready. So be as ready as you’ll ever be. Ready your audition outfit, perfect your dance routine, rehearse your introduction, and get fit.

6. Stop waiting for permission

It’s good to be supported and we all love to be helped. But you shouldn’t wait for people to support you because you’re auditioning for a position in a pro cheer squad. It’s your job to cheer not to be cheered up. What if nobody comes to your aid? This pro cheer dream is yours and you alone should make the decisions and actions in achieving it.

7. Stop hesitating

In addition to fear and feeling anxious about the auditions, you’ll also feel doubtful in your preparation that results in you hesitating to show up. So don’t make reasons or excuses that cause your hesitation. Instead, find these reasons and trash them. Foster a “Just Do It” mentality.

8. Understand that failure and frustration is part of the business

Not everyone will win. The auditions are a competition, an athletic event, a battle of who is the most confident, athletic, fit, flexible, and graceful pro cheer aspirant. You way not make the cut or you may make it. What matters is you made your preparations and did your best.

The auditions aren’t something you should be anxious of but rather an event you should be excited about and look forward to. So do your best in your preparation. Take deep breaths and keep on exercising. Rehearse your dancing to perfection. Most importantly when audition day comes, have fun and believe in yourself!
