3 Tips for Choosing the Right Workout Gear

Making that life-changing decision to start a healthy lifestyle often entails eating healthy food, changing the way you consume food, your day to day habits and of course, a workout plan.

When it comes to exercise, a lot of women miss considering the right workout gear.

Look cute and get it right, too…

Let’s be presentable. I know some may want to take snaps while at the gym but it also pays to know that the right workout gear doesn’t just mean looking good as you sweat it out on your routine or training or class.

Bear in mind that whether you choose to workout at the gym or home, the right workout gear will not only keep you comfortable with every motion, it will also help you fully and safely perform your workout.

Here are some tips to get you started:

1. Figuring out the right workout clothes

You find cute ones but they’re a little bit tight and you think, “I’ll squeeze in this for a while because I’ll be able to wear this eventually, anyway”.

We all have our goals and it’s great not to sway our focus, but if you’re just settling for that because they look nice, “don’t”. It might look pleasing as you strike a pose in front of the gym’s full-length mirror but it’s not something that you need.

And it’s not just the tight ones. Baggy workout clothes are also no-nos as these can restrict movement or worse, it can get caught in one of the equipment.

Make sure you buy size-appropriate clothes that you’re comfortable with in every movement.

There’s some actual science behind these clothes. There’s a reason why they’re cut in certain ways, why there’s a mesh part or why they hug in specific areas of our body. Yes, even the fabric counts. Go for something breathable and wicks sweat away from your skin to keep you cool.

Think of the weather, too. You may layer clothing during the cool months and you can wear dark colors, while in summer, you can pick light ones.

2. Your sports bra is your best friend...

So choose the right one.

A good sports bra compresses and supports your breasts (and keeps them from bouncing painfully) during a workout so you’re comfortable.

When choosing the right one, find one that feels a little tighter than your regular everyday bra but still not too tight so it doesn’t restrict your movements. This prevents muscle strain and tearing. Yes, you can tear your muscle tissues so get good quality ones.

There are different kinds of sports bra depending on your activity. Ask help from shop staff if you’re unsure of the fit. Remember to replace them once they’re worn out from use or when the elastic band around your rib cage becomes loose.

3. Invest in a good pair of shoes

Not all feet are the same. Expensive (or cheap) brands don’t automatically mean that it’s what you need. What you can do is to find good quality shoes that can support your feet during your activities.

Some shops have a free assessment so you can get shoes that’s right for you. Some may be flat-footed or have more prominent arcs that would require arc support.

Consider also the type of workout that you’ll be doing. If you’re going to do a lot of lifting, look for shoes that have a firm and flat grip on the ground. Get running shoes for the treadmill. If you’ll do more cardio or strength-training, find cushioned shoes that can support you as you do your routine.

Comfort is key

To wrap things up, just make sure that your workout gear will keep you comfy and not get in the way throughout your exercise. It will help you achieve optimal results and keep you away from exercise-related injuries.
