5 Motivational Tricks for Fitness That Work

I bet you and I can agree that most people start out really strong and ready to conquer the world. After a few days or a week, the initial energy dips. The mind begins to make up excuses because the truth is, real transformation is hard.

Professional cheerleaders, especially those who aspire to become one, may feel less motivated to workout. Regardless of the fitness goal that a woman wants to achieve, we all go through the similar difficulties - not to mention those shameful moments when we choose to slack off on our diet. Those tortilla chips never saved the day.

Okay, so, how do you keep the motivation going? Whether you got an entire year for preparation or a few weeks left, I have 5 helpful tips for you below.

1. Get yourself beautiful workout clothing.

Have you noticed that women who are into fitness nowadays head off to the gym or even to the grocery in cute workout clothes? There’s a term called “enclothed cognition” which means that how you dress up impacts your psychological processes.

So, wearing great workout clothes actually changes your attitude towards exercise. You feel happy and more motivated!

Here’s a pro tip: Get workout clothes with colors that represent your dream cheer team. For example, a combination of royal blue and white goes for the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders.

2. Have fitness role models.

There are plenty of role models in various aspects of life, and fitness is no exception. While comparing yourself to others does you no good, adopting a role model you can look up to has many advantages:

  • Fitness role models show you what REAL SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
  • They teach you ways to overcome obstacles
  • They give you specific guidelines and steps on how to do a workout

Since you’re auditioning for an NBL or NBA dance team, check out your team’s Instagram page or official website. You’ll find a lot of workouts and pieces of great fitness advice.

3. Visualize your success.

Reaching your fitness goals starts in the mind. Yes, this tactic is visualization. I’m a firm believer that painting a picture of your success helps you get closer to it. In a 2016 The Washington Post article, it was mentioned that swimmer Missy Franklin spends a lot of time thinking about her success. She quotes, “When I get there, I’ve already pictured what’s going to happen a million times.”

Before you go to bed or wake up in the morning, picture out the kind of body you want - lean and strong. Next, think about the exact steps on how to get there. Be very specific.

4. Set daily and weekly workout challenges.

A workout can be fun and intimidating when you try it the first time. As you master that workout, it gets easier and no longer requires a lot of focus. Setting yourself up for regular challenges gets you going.

You decide what your challenges would be - make sure they actually challenge you. For example, on triceps day, add 5-10 reps for bench dips. In a week, it can be learning a workout you used to hate such as a reverse plank or burpees.

5. Make a workout shorter but more intense.

Hate to endure a 30-minute workout on a hectic day? There’s no need for it. Here’s the trick to not skipping a workout, making the most out of it, and feeling awesome afterward: Make it SHORT BUT INTENSE.

If you’re doing weightlifting, this can mean adding more weight and decreasing your reps. It can also imply sprinting than running in place. If you use an elliptical, increase the resistance and sweat it out for 15 minutes. Remember that at higher intensities, you burn more fat. Overall the experience is rewarding.
