Do you believe that focus is the key to success in anything? Most people know the benefits of focus such as a faster progress, the ability to solve problems effectively, and improved learning. But only a few have actually experienced what it means to stay focused.
If you’re preparing for a future audition, especially if it’s months or a year ahead, it’s easy to get distracted. You’re overwhelmed with a truckload of information on what to do. You’re taking huge leaps instead of mastering the basics. Workout procrastination hits you.
This is why today, I’m helping you retain your focus with a 10-step plan. Don’t be stuck in the status quo because you know that you have the power to make a positive and massive change! Let’s get started.
1. Meditate before you proceed with your daily training.
This is one of the ways that boost your concentration right away: Meditate! Meditation works by helping you get rid of unwanted thoughts (especially worries about the past and future). Instead, you pay attention to the present moment.
Here’s how to get started: Find a spot in your home that allows you to sit comfortably. Sit still. Next, relax. Inhale deeply through your nose. As you exhale, recite a mantra (for example “Ohmm”)

2. Turn off, put away your phone, or don’t check notifications.
All those emails, chat messages, and other forms of online distractions are killing your momentum. When you’re constantly checking your phone while you are exercising, checking out your dream team’s page, or learning some pro cheer tips, you cannot put your full attention on what’s right in front of you.
3. Create milestones that push you to progress.
When a goal is far off, people have the tendency to not appreciate the positive changes they’ve made so far. For example, if your dancing requires a lot of improvement, the act of signing up for a dance class and mastering a few techniques may not mean that much to you.
Milestones help you realize and recognize the fact that you have made progress. Most importantly, they keep you on track. You can mark your calendar for an important milestone. An example would be to lose 4 pounds within 4 weeks from the start of your workout program.
4. Use motivational techniques.
Being motivated is one of the keys to staying focused. Motivation allows you to create opportunities for yourself that support your professional cheerleader goals despite hardships and setbacks. Here are some motivational tips to try:
Remind yourself of your WHY. Why do you want to become a professional cheerleader?
Ask yourself, “How will I feel later if I do this now?”
Put up motivational sayings on your wall.
Recite positive, uplifting affirmations to yourself each day.
Watch videos that educate and inspire - for example, TED Talks.
5. Give yourself time to relax.
The advice to take breaks at work in order to regain focus is applicable to when you are in the process of reaching a goal. You need intentional breaks. Getting too “caught up” in something drains you. As a result, you become less creative and less efficient. Take a step back and realize how far you have come.
If you are a relentless striver, spend a day doing nothing and slip into a positive daydream where you plan and rehearse your next steps or how you want the pro cheer auditions to go. Of course, everything has to be in your favor.
