5 Ways Diet Affects Your Physical Appearance

You are what you eat. Whether you believe this or not, this saying is true.

You may think that exercise is the only thing that impacts how you look but what you put in your body yields more results. Food supplies your cells with the raw ingredients needed for repair and regeneration. Bad food gives you poor results. Good food brings out your best beauty.

To help you understand the effects of diet on your looks, I’ve prepared this guide for you.

How Diet Affects Beauty

1. Weight

Let’s begin with the most obvious effect of food which is your waistline. Going back to the topic of food versus exercise, a 2015 study shows why calorie control is more successful than working out. Here’s the explanation: Over time, your body gets used to your exercise regimen. We call this weight loss plateau. (Read: How to Diversify Your Workouts for the Best Results)

Getting more out of your food to achieve a healthy weight loss can be done by choosing whole foods. Foods that help you stay fuller longer and are loaded with nutrients include the following: Leafy greens, lean beef sirloin, salmon, boiled potatoes, and chicken breast.

2. Skin

Eating healthy allows for the production of collagen, the most abundant protein in your body. Collagen is responsible for skin elasticity - no wonder why older women take it as supplements.

Now what refined sugar does is that it attaches to collagen (a process called glycation) and breaks it down. This results in fine lines and wrinkles. Since this gives you an idea of how bad refined sugars are, make sure to avoid them. Stay away from white bread, candies, cookies, and other pastries. Be mindful of your drinks as well.

3. Hair

Do you know that your hair says a lot about your health? While we pro cheerleaders dye and style our hair to enhance our looks, proper nourishment through food keeps our locks lustrous. Hair and scalp issues may be influenced by genetics but they also arise as a result of a deficiency of nutrients.

The top nutrients for healthy hair include vitamin A, B vitamins, vitamin E, and vitamin C. Get these through foods such as tangerines, almond butter, strawberries, fish, and eggs. Remember, your hair needs feeding too!

4. Lips

You probably are getting chapped lips but only blame them on your lipstick. Most likely you’ll think of buying an overnight lip moisturizing treatment. Similar to nourishing your skin through the right foods, you need to keep your lips moist through hydration. Avoid too many salty foods and caffeine. Drink more water - aim for 2 liters per day.

What are foods that promote healthy and moist lips? Some of the best examples are spinach, broccoli, chia seeds, and almonds.

5. Eyes

Sparkling and shiny eyes are attractive, and they make you look alive on the audition day. Poor nutrition dulls your eyes and promotes under-eye circles (but remember, you should get adequate sleep as well!).

Make sure that you consume carotenoids. Carotenoids are plant pigments found in certain foods like green peas, kale, spinach, and summer squash. They also act as antioxidants to promote a healthy eyesight. Best of all, they bring back that sparkling appearance.

These are just a few of the many ways that diet helps or hinders your appearance. As you can see, food is a huge driver of beauty. Make the right choices and you’ll see how better your weight, skin, hair, lips, and eyes can look.
