6 Important Things Martial Arts Can Teach Pro Cheerleaders

Martial arts are mostly learned for the purpose of self-defense. In a world where women are more vulnerable than our male counterparts, it’s important that we know at least one form of hand-to-hand combat to fight back when faced with danger.

But there are more benefits of martial arts than defending yourself. In this blog post, we’re going to discuss the things you can learn as a pro cheerleader by taking interest in martial arts.

1. It greatly boosts your confidence

Deep inside, we all have our insecurities and feelings of inferiority. They may be physical, emotional, or mental. A day spent in a dojo is full of praise even for a beginner because everyone is equal. Even a weak punch executed with the right form will make your sifu say, “Excellent work!” And that’s the kind of confidence booster you won’t find everywhere.

2. It strengthens your mental, emotional, and physical fortitude

Getting punched, kicked, or slammed to the floor is no joke and it can make a lot of people tear up. But these things are temporary adversaries such as getting rejected at the auditions. The path of martial arts trains your mind to ignore any pain and adopt a warrior mindset - that there is no glory in giving up. The only way to win is to try again, endure, improve, and push forward.

3. It gives you an outlet for stress

Nothing feels better than letting out all your problems in life and pro cheerleading by picking something and throwing it across the room with all your might. Sometimes it’s even better to beat something up with your fist, knees, elbows, and feet.

Being a martial arts practitioner teaches you to never bottle your emotions and affect people around you when you’ve had enough. Instead, practice that 1-2-3 combo you wanted to use on rude people you dealt with earlier.

4. It helps you foster meaningful friendships

A PRO CHEER LIFE community member said, “One of the best experiences I had while training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was that we were always a community. You could even say we were family. Unlike in the fitness gym where most people wore headphones. Because of that, I learned how to socialize when I joined my dream team.”

5. It teaches you the importance of discipline and living a healthy lifestyle

Martial arts is about disciplining your mind and body. You must never let your emotions, instincts, and immediate desires take full control over you if you want to be a master. That same lesson applies to pro cheerleading. You cannot be a good pro cheerleader by living a sedentary lifestyle, not developing self-care habits, and not practicing your choreographies.

6. It teaches you that focus is essential

In your first martial arts class, you will learn that to understand a technique, you must give your undivided awareness to your instructor. Nowadays, distractions are all around us. They come in different forms such as technology, social media, and your neighbors fighting next door.

When you unlock the secret of having laser-sharp focus, you become calmer and more receptive to learning — May the lesson be dance moves, makeup application techniques, or how to cook your pro cheer meal for the day.

Learning martial arts as a pro cheerleader may add up to your already hectic daily routine. Here’s the beautiful catch: You can substitute gym workouts for martial arts training. What you need to think about now is what type of form you'll practice. I personally like Hung Gar Kung Fu due to its value of patience and hard power.
