7 Pro Cheer Audition Mistakes to Avoid

Auditions can be nerve-wracking, but they are also an opportunity to showcase your talent and land the career of your dreams — professional cheerleading! However, many aspiring dancers and cheerleaders make common audition mistakes that can hinder their performance.

In this article, we will discuss some audition mistakes to avoid to give yourself the best chance of success.

Lack of Preparation

One of the biggest audition mistakes you can make is not preparing adequately. It is essential to practice your audition material in advance. Be sure to improve your dance and public speaking skills until you are confident in your ability to deliver a great performance.

Arriving Late

Arriving late to an audition is a surefire way to start off on the wrong foot. Make sure to plan ahead and give yourself plenty of time to arrive at the audition location with time to spare. This will help to reduce stress and allow you to focus on your audition performance.

Not Dressing Appropriately

Dressing appropriately for a dance audition is essential. Be sure to research the team you’re auditioning for beforehand to get an idea of what style of clothing is expected.

For example, the Cincinnati Bengals recommends wearing athletic spandex shorts, sports bra, (crop top) sneakers, and hosiery. Meanwhile, the Indianapolis Colts Cheerleaders require auditioning in athletic leggings or capris and an athletic tank or half top.

Dressing professionally will show that you take the audition seriously and are ready to give it your all!

Failing to Read the Audition Notice

Another common mistake is not reading the audition notice thoroughly. This can lead to missed requirements or instructions, which can be a significant disadvantage. Make sure to read the audition notice carefully, paying close attention to the audition requirements and any special instructions.

Forgetting to Bring the Required Materials

Many auditions require performers to bring specific materials with them, such as a headshot or resume. Forgetting to bring these materials can put you at a significant disadvantage. Be sure to double-check the audition notice to see what’s required and prepare them the day before the audition.

Failing to Connect with the Audience

An audition is not just about showcasing your talent, but also about connecting with the judges. Failing to make eye contact or connect can make your performance seem distant and unengaging. Be sure to make eye contact and connect with the audience to help them feel the emotion and energy of your performance.

Nervousness

It's natural to feel nervous during an audition, but nervousness can be a significant disadvantage. Try to relax and focus on your performance rather than worrying about the outcome. Take deep breaths, visualize success, and remind yourself that you are capable and prepared!

Final Thoughts

Avoiding these common audition mistakes can significantly increase your chances of making the team this year. Stay calm and give it your all. More importantly, trust the process. The things you do starting today will make a big impact on your audition day performance.
