7 Ways to Stop Procrastinating and Start Focusing On Your Pro Cheer Audition Goals
More often than not, we hurry and panic when it's almost the big day. But when a goal still seems far away, instead of preparing, we procrastinate. This is one of the biggest reasons why a great candidate doesn't make the team.
As you can see, procrastination is a poor habit that derails your success. If you want to become a professional cheerleader, you must stop procrastination from ruling your life. When you overcome procrastination, you're able to focus. Start with these tips:
1. Set realistic expectations for yourself.
There's nothing wrong with setting high standards because such standards raise the quality of your preparation. You do what you need to do to get fitter, dance better, speak better, and look great! But here's the thing: Do not set expectations based on other people. That's comparison. Do not expect yourself to keep striving without being able to enjoy yourself once in a while. Unrealistic expectations lead to procrastination.
2. Change your environment.
Did you know that the environment in which you prepare for the auditions impacts your productivity? Clutter in your surroundings is one factor that keeps you from focusing. A dark room does not inspire creativity. It drains your energy too! Choose to practice in an environment that makes you feel good about yourself.
3. Set time limits for your mini goals.
When do you think you can master those basic Jazz moves? How long will it take for you to finish one chapter of an audition prep ebook? One of the best ways to reach your goals is to set deadlines for them. Make sure to write down deadlines on your calendar. Share those deadlines with a supportive friend or family member to hold yourself accountable.
4. Reach out to a former or current pro cheerleader!
Connect with someone who has reached your dream. Ask around if your friends know of former pro cheerleaders. Do a Google search. Or simply join Pro Cheer Life's Facebook group and my email list so we can connect! Those who have already reached your goal are the best people to seek advice from. It will inspire and motivate you to take action!
5. Do not overcomplicate things.
It's easier to accomplish something when you keep it simple. Don't know how to get started with your audition prep journey? Stop worrying and do your research. Don't have enough money to sign-up for a gym membership? Workout outdoors or from the comfort of your home. Feeling insecure? Stop comparing yourself to others.
6. Entice yourself with a reward.
Rewards are effective anti-procrastination tools. When all else fails, they can be the best reason to keep trying and keep taking action. How about coffee at your favorite coffee shop? Or a massage? You decide.
7. Find people who can effectively push you.
Surround yourself with people who'll be able to hold you responsible. Find an accountability partner who can check in on you each day. That accountability partner doesn't have to be an aspiring pro cheerleader. She can simply be a fitness enthusiast, a dancer, or someone who's great at speaking in public.
