Pro Cheer Advice: How to Stop Overthinking and Start Doing

Do you know what successful people have in common? They don’t allow their thoughts to stop them from reaching their goals. You see, a hundred different things could run through our minds and yet no single thing is accomplished.

Overthinking is a problem that a lot of aspiring professional cheerleaders face. You over-analyze your preparation journey. You can’t seem to let go of the little mistakes. At the end of the day, you feel more stressed than ever.

Today, I’m going to show you how to stop overthinking everything and get something done today. Remember: Nothing ever happens without action.

1. Decide that you’re not going to spend the day overthinking.

The truth is, you can’t control everything that happens in your day. You could be stuck in an activity and you miss your gym workout. When you wake up in the morning, decide that you’re going to stay positive no matter what. And if something unexpected happens, you know you can pick one solution.

2. Focus on small steps.

Sometimes we get too ambitious. Our eyes are stuck on the final goal (to become a professional cheerleader). While there’s nothing wrong with that, we have to realize that sub-goals or mini-goals are what will lead us to the overall goal. Need to lose 10 pounds? What’s your next meal going to be like so you can lose weight?

3. Protect yourself from negative people’s energy.

A co-worker who complains endlessly about everything that’s wrong in her life. That friend of yours who rants about her unpleasant experiences. Overthinking can result from tuning into another person’s negativity. It could affect you more than you know. You don’t have to completely avoid someone or try to change their negative tendencies. But you can decide to “distance yourself emotionally” and introduce lighter topics of discussion.

4. Become a person of action!

If you want transformation, whether that’s your physique, public speaking skills, or dance technique, take action RIGHT NOW. Yes - this very moment. Every passing moment is a chance to do something productive that will change your future. Are you making the most out of it? Or are you stuck in thoughts?

5. Set a schedule to operate by.

Instead of giving yourself deadlines to meet your goals, create an actual schedule that forces you to work on them. Previously, I wrote a blog post about following a weekly calendar. Mondays are for cardio workouts, Tuesdays are for researching about your dream dance team, Wednesdays are for strength workouts, and so on. A schedule simplifies your journey - that’s why it works.

6. Find a mentor.

Sometimes, the only way to get unstuck is to get professional advice. Talk to someone who can offer advice related to your pro cheer goals. For example, if you need to develop your flexibility, find a fitness guru. If it’s about your audition attire, connect with a former pro cheerleader or email me! Join a pro cheer Facebook group. The right people can help you overcome your challenges.
