Powerful Ways to Nurture Optimism for an Upcoming Dance Audition

This week, I want to talk about improving your outlook on pro cheer auditions. I think this is a crucial topic to discuss because a lot of women who aspire to audition for a pro cheer team struggle to stay positive. The road to becoming a professional cheerleader is filled with challenges ranging from a lack of family support to a lack of confidence in one's abilities.

In this article, you will find my best pieces of advice on how you can find optimism in any situation... because the whole pro cheer audition prep experience is more fulfilling when you're happy.

1. Ask yourself questions that are MORE HELPFUL.

I find that one of the simplest ways to alter your perception of a negative situation is to ask better questions. For instance, let's imagine that someone made a remark that was "supposed" to hurt your feelings. Instead of asking yourself, "What's so wrong about my dream to become a professional cheerleader?" You could ask, "What's the opportunity in this?"

2. Remind yourself that positivity is a CHOICE.

We often overlook the fact that we are in total control of how we respond to negative situations. Stop placing the blame on external forces that you have little to no control over. Anything can happen, but it's up to you how you respond!

3. Set audition prep GOALS and follow through.

Create more structure in your audition preparation by setting goals you can actually achieve. Not only will this help you tackle specific problem areas, but it will also give you a sense of accomplishment. For example, a goal for month 1 of your audition prep could be: Working out on the treadmill for 15 minutes a day. This could be achieved without using a ton of resources. You could even set an alarm to remind yourself.

4. Actively practice GRATITUDE.

I challenge you to do this: Three times each day, pause for ten minutes and notice the things in your day that are taking you closer to your pro cheer dream. These things could be anything:

  • An uplifting quote your read online that reminded you to take care of your body.
  • A video that gave you insight into how you can improve your dance technique.
  • A challenge that reminded you to be patient with your progress.

5. USE YOUR BODY to change your thoughts.

Motivational speaker and author Tony Robbins follows a physical ritual ten minutes before he enters the stage. He makes sure that he shows up mentally prepared to positively impact his audience. He jumps up and down, does fist pumps, and more. The whole point of this is that you can change your body to change your mind. Smile. Do a HIIT workout to relax. Wear clothing that makes you feel good about your body!

6. Don't sweat the SMALL STUFF.

Most often than not, we complain when things don't go our way - even the smallest of things. You spilled your morning cup of coffee. You slept through your alarm and missed a workout because of that. You suffered a slow internet connection and wasn't able to research your dream cheer team. Take your emotions out of the picture and think of the next best step you can take to solve the problem.
