9 Things to Say "No" to This Audition Season

You’ve learned a lot of things to do in preparation for the auditions. But have you learned enough of the things that you “shouldn’t” do?

Anything can happen during the audition preparations that may derail your progress. It’s sad to say that most of them go unnoticed and yet they keep you from making the team. Now it's time to identify what these are how you can avoid them.

1. Comparing yourself to others

It’s okay to idolize others, particularly professional cheerleaders, to stay inspired. But what isn't good is when you start to compare yourself to them. If you do, you criticize yourself and let the feeling of underachievement and personal failure to sink in. Comparing sabotages your self-confidence. Bottom line? Quit making comparisons.

2. Perfectionism

To strive for something higher is good. But don’t set unrealistic standards. Being too much of a perfectionist is like playing a dangerous game of Jenga. All it takes is one tiny mistake and everything falls apart. Accept that there are things you can do and things you cannot do. You can try but acknowledge that you also have your limits.

3. Eating unhealthy food

Fitness is one of your main goals. That is why if you're serious, you should learn to eliminate fast food from your diet. Learn to say no to unhealthy food temptations, unless it’s a PLANNED cheat day.

4. Sacrificing your sleep

Sleep plays a significant role in your overall wellness. If you sleep less, your workout performance dips. A lack of proper nighttime rest not only gives you wrinkles and dark eye circles, but it also impacts your mental attitude which isn’t ideal for the audition preparation.

5. Following the same workout routine

Using a workout routine repetitively makes the body very efficient. Once it does, your body gets used to that specific routine and that's when you'll hit a plateau. A single routine also focuses on muscle growth in one part of the body, leaving other parts to be imbalanced. Try various workout exercises. Mix them up every few weeks.

6. Making excuses for not doing the work

Remember that there are tons of things on your to-do list for achieving your audition goals. Missing your routines often makes your entire preparation less effective and this can slow you down. When your schedule indicates that it is time to workout, just do it. When it comes to eating, follow your diet plan.

7. Paying attention to naysayers

Naysayers are envious and insecure people. They spark negative emotions in people with ambitions and goals like you so that you get discouraged and lose the drive to achieve. Stay away from these people and shut them out of your life. Know your worth and quit believing in what they say.

8. Entertaining distractions you’re not supposed to focus on

“It’s time to do my workout but my friends just called, telling me that they’re going to the mall.” One word - “No.” Stay focused on what’s on your schedule. There’s an appropriate time and place for everything. If your alarm tells you to workout, do it. If you have free time, then you can go have fun.

9. Ignoring your small accomplishments

If you focus too much on the end goal instead of small accomplishments, you’re bound to feel overwhelmed and disappointed. Don’t practice this kind of mindset. Focus on the tiny progress you make and you’d be surprised at what you achieve at the end of the day. You’d be so impressed with yourself.

Keep in mind that for your audition preparation to be successful, you have to make sacrifices and exercise a strong mental will. It is easy to say yes to things that break our audition prep routine, so prove yourself worthy of being a professional cheerleader by saying no when it's needed.
