Amazing Things That Happen to Your Body When You Quit Sugar

You might be thinking of eliminating sugar from your diet because you see a lot of dieters do it. But does quitting sugar truly benefit you? And if so, what are its actual benefits? Keep reading to learn more about getting rid of sugar as part of your pro cheer fitness goals.

Nobody Said It Was Easy

I want to start by saying that kicking a sugar habit can be extremely difficult for most people. As you may already know, we live in a world where sugar hides in almost all the foods we eat - salad dressings, condiments, energy drinks, fruit juices, cold cereal, and foods that are labeled as “fat-free.” The more you eat sugar, the more your brain craves for it. That is because sugar triggers the release of serotonin, a feel-good hormone.

While there are many ways to cut your sugar intake, such as taking baby steps or making healthy swaps, first you should understand how doing it helps your pro cheerleader body.

The Benefits of Giving Up Sugar

Here are some favorable results you can expect:

  1. Weight loss - Study shows that excessive sugar consumption contributes to weight gain. It affects your weight in that it packs empty calories (too many calories yet with very few nutrients). Sugar also raises your insulin levels. Insulin is a hormone that promotes fat storage.
  1. More stable energy levels - Professional cheerleaders should be able to sustain their energy for hours on the field. The problem with eating too much sugar is that you experience highs followed by crashes. Not to mention, mood swings. Quitting sugar will help you stay focused and alert.
  1. Younger-looking skin - Did you know that sugar found in processed foods can cause your skin to age? That’s because sugar triggers the production of AGEs (Advanced Glycation End Products) that causes a loss of skin elasticity.
  1. Increased willpower - When you’re physically tired because of the “blood sugar roller coaster,” your willpower also decreases. Imagine controlling your cravings and also being able to use that newly acquired self-discipline in other areas of your life.

Set Yourself Up for Success

It’s the actions you take each day that determine your results. To succeed at quitting sugar, here are ideas that will help:

  • Know what to expect - During the first few days of reducing your sugar intake, you may experience intense cravings and headaches. These withdrawal symptoms are normal. To fight cravings, have healthy high-fat foods handy. They will fill you up.
  • Stay hydrated - Dehydration can make you believe that you need to eat something when in reality, you only have to drink more water.
  • Get active - If you are still thinking of auditioning for a professional cheerleading team, this is your opportunity to boost your fitness level. Any form of exercise, as long as it gets your body moving, will stabilize your blood sugar levels.
