As ambassadors of a sports team, pro cheerleaders are often under the spotlight. And when all eyes are on you, and you feel you have not done something well, it’s easy to find yourself in embarrassing situations. 

Whether you forgot a step in your dance routine, made a mistake, had a wardrobe malfunction, or had an awkward social moment, these are situations you may encounter at any point in your pro cheer career. These feelings of embarrassment can make you question your self-image and feel out of place, shameful, or uncomfortable, especially in front of an audience. 

Although there’s no way to avoid embarrassing moments entirely, it doesn’t mean you can’t try to overcome them. Here are five tips on how to move on from embarrassment and gain back your self-confidence. 

1. Be kind to yourself

Mistakes are part of being a pro cheerleader. If you experience an embarrassing moment, beating yourself up will only make you feel worse. As a result, it reduces your self-confidence and self-esteem even further. For you to move on, you must treat yourself with kindness and compassion. 

Practice self-compassion by convincing yourself that your mistakes don’t define you and encouraging yourself to do better next time.

2. Confront the situation 

When you’ve done something embarrassing, you should confront it sooner rather than later. Admitting you’ve made a mistake will make it easier to put what happened behind you and move on from the embarrassment. Plus, it will make you feel better to have some closure and know that this embarrassing moment will pass. Besides, avoiding the situation will only increase feelings of shame, anxiety, or self-pity. 

3. Take deep breaths

If being embarrassed is causing you to panic and worry, try taking deep breaths and calm yourself. Deep breathing can help reduce symptoms of anxiety, shame, and guilt, especially after going through an embarrassing experience. Focus on your breathing by counting your breaths. Remember to breathe through your nose and let your belly fill with air as you count to five. Then, breathe out slowly through your nose for another 5 seconds.

4. Consider it a learning experience

One way to overcome an embarrassing situation is to find the lesson from that experience. For example, maybe you didn’t practice enough for your performance, which is why you forgot the steps from your dance routine. Or perhaps you were too busy and wore the wrong outfit for an event. These things can happen, but knowing where you went wrong can help you prepare better the next time.

5. Laugh it off

Humor is an excellent way to deal with the embarrassment and make the experience less threatening. Sometimes an embarrassing moment can be passed on as nothing more than a laughable experience. The next time you feel embarrassed, try not to take it too seriously and just make a joke about it to lighten the situation.
