Every woman who aspires to become a professional cheerleader, at some point, will ask if she needs to have a background in cheerleading. While many current pro cheerleaders used to cheer in high school, this kind of background isn't a requirement. Professional cheerleaders carry themselves differently. They have different dance techniques, although I have to say that a dance background is a huge advantage.
To be an NFL or NBA cheerleader, here's what you should do:
Gather information about your pro cheer team.
Which team do you plan to audition for? Is it the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders? Denver Broncos Cheerleaders? Miami Heat Dancers? Every pro cheer and dance team has different audition times, and these will change each year. Having an idea of when auditions will take place helps you plan out your year. Figure our your audition outfit, the dance style of the squad, etc.

Take dance classes.
Having a background in dance is important because basically, you will be performing for the fans by dancing! If you're completely new to dancing, I highly recommend that you take a dance class and take a lot of time to master different techniques. Try Hip-Hop or Street styles, Jazz, and Ballet. Find a local studio and a great online resource that will help. You'll need to really practice, especially when it comes to picking up dance choreography fast. It's going to be a long-term process, but if you're willing to wait until next year's tryouts and train yourself for the meantime, you will get better.
Attend audition workshops.
Audition workshops are valuable opportunities to learn the actual style and choreography of your team, and have an idea of the audition process from the previous year. Some workshops will even offer an audition day makeup tutorial and special Q&A session with the team director or veteran cheerleaders. Usually, pro cheer audition workshops come with a fee but they're truly worth it. To reserve a spot, head over to your dream team's website and check for the availability of classes.
Get in shape.
Some women who want to be pro cheerleaders struggle with weight issues. Keep in mind that pro cheerleading uniforms are designed to flaunt your figure, which is one of the reasons why you should start working out as early as possible to achieve fat loss. Fat loss isn't just important for aesthetic reasons, but it also helps you feel more confident, sustain your energy even after long hours of performing, and stay healthy.
