Gratitude in Your Pro Cheer Career: How to Cultivate It

Here’s a great fact about life: People who are grateful are more likely to succeed. This is true for everyone, including yourself — a pro cheerleader or dancer.

Gratitude increases your performance because it makes you feel abundant and accomplished. It allows you to overcome difficult times with more ease and it motivates you to become a better version of yourself.

However, you might think that gratitude comes naturally. The truth is that most of us are hardwired to give greater weight to negative experiences. This can make it challenging for us to feel thankful.

Gratitude takes work, but it’s worth it. Here are some ways you can practice thankfulness in your pro cheer or dance career.

Take notice of the smallest things.

No matter how your day went, make a list of 3-5 things that went well. They can include an act of kindness you did for someone on your team or the fact that you were able to have a productive dance practice with your teammates. These small wins can help improve your overall mental state.

Remember why you started.

From time to time, it's important to recall the early days of your pro cheerleading or dance journey. Perhaps you started cheering in college and then fantasized about performing in a local professional dance team. Take yourself back to these moments and bring yourself to the present moment. Appreciate the fact that you’re finally here. You’ve reached your dream.

Give sincere compliments.

It’s easy to get wrapped up in ourselves and our own problems. But, several times each day, it helps to pause and notice the good things about other people. When giving a compliment, make sure that it resonates with something you genuinely feel for someone. Compliments can include statements like:

  •  “I like your style.”
  •  “You have the best ideas!”
  •  “You’re great at figuring stuff out.”
  •  “You’re a great example to others.”
  •  “You’re more helpful than you realize.”
  •  “That color is perfect on you.”

Complimenting doesn’t only make a teammate feel good, but it also makes you as the compliment giver happier as well. It sparks positive energy and strengthens relationships.

When you hear yourself complaining, try something positive.

Do you complain too much? You might want to take notice of the usual content of your conversations. Is it focused on not doing, being, or having enough? By minimizing complaining, you can feel calmer, less stressed, and more focused on becoming your best self in your career.

Strategies that may help you complain less and welcome more positivity include journaling (this can include brainstorming solutions for a negative situation), thinking of a peaceful place, or doing something that brings happiness — such as watching a funny video, reading inspiring quotes, going out for a walk, or exercising.

Now that you’ve learned these gratitude tips, feel free to share them with someone from your team who will greatly benefit from them! With some effort, you can add happiness to your day and your career.
