Have You Started Doing Your Pro Cheer or Dance Team Research?
Research is an important task you must do in your audition preparation process. To make a positive impression on the BIG DAY, you should learn your dream team’s requirements, look, dance style, and more. Even before you begin preparing, make sure that you research. Doing this helps guide you as to where you should invest your time in.
Think about it this way: If you didn’t know a team’s dance style, you might sign-up for the wrong dance class. Or if you had no idea about their look, you might practice doing the wrong makeup. You get the idea.
Today’s article will show you some of the essential areas the need research. Now where do you find the information for each area below? Check out their official team website/page, Instagram account, and YouTube. Or you can simply start with a Google search!
Things You Should Research About Your Pro Cheer/Dance Team
1. Job description
Each pro cheer/dance team has list of specific expectations from a candidate. They often indicate the physical demands of the position (for example, dancing, running, kicking, etc.) and required fitness level you should have. This should guide you in terms of your exercise routine and dance practice.
2. Weight, height, or size requirement
Are they looking for a specific height, weight, and size? Even if they mention that there is no specific requirement, it’s good to take a look at the pictures of current team members.
3. What you will wear to the auditions
Make sure to present yourself properly by taking note of their required outfit. NBA dance teams often require a two-piece dance attire and non-marking shoes (Jazz shoes or dance sneakers). You also want to check about jewelry. Your dance team may place limits on accessories. Start planning your audition attire!

4. Dance training
Of course, prior dance training is essential for making the team. Take note of the type of dance style that your team requires. Most teams prefer training in Jazz and Hip-Hop dance. Also check if they need tumbling skills, stunts, and pom experience. Start practicing dancing with pom-poms as well.
5. Prep classes and workshops
Many pro cheerleading and dance teams help you prepare better for the auditions by offering prep classes, clinics, and workshops. In fact, these classes may teach the actual choreography that will be taught during the preliminary round. Check for the class dates and reserve a spot!
6. Types of audition rounds
Auditions consist of multiple rounds. You want to know what each round is about and what you need to prepare for in order to give your best during that round. For example, in round 1, you may be required to prepare a dance move of 16 eight counts. This should help you prepare a solo dance that’s sure to impress the judges.
Whatever you’re preparing for, my top advice for you is to START EARLY!!! This should give you ample time to polish your technique, correct your mistakes, experiment with new things, and improve.
