Healthy Skin Doesn't Have to Be Expensive: 8 Budget-Friendly Tips

When we talk about making our skin younger, glowing, plump, and healthy, one thing that comes to mind is an intricate skincare routine with products that have hefty price tags. You should know that there are more ways to keep your skin healthy without going to the beauty store and paying a premium.

Some of the ingredients used to nourish and clean your skin are found in your kitchen. Others are available in nature. When it comes to hydrating your body’s largest organ - the skin, you can also use ordinary products like lotions and moisturizers. Take out your notebook and list down 8 skincare tips that are cost-effective.

1. Water, water, and water

Drink more than 8 glasses of water every day to keep your skin hydrated especially during warm and hot months. Skin gets most of its moisture from the air. Since there is no moisture from hot weather, your skin could be severely dehydrated and damaged.

Drinking a lot of water will keep your cells hydrated and in turn, would bring water to your skin from the inside. Is plain water too boring? Make it fun by adding infusions!

2. Moisturizers and lotions

Moisturizers lock moisture into your skin. They also bring in vitamins and minerals. The same goes for lotions. But lotions have more water and oil so they fit better for your body. Depending on your skin type, you can use water or oil-based moisturizer and lotion.

For dry skin, an oil-based product would be the best while a water-based product would fit better for oily skin.

3. Sunlight and sunscreen

Getting your daily dose of vitamin D from sunlight helps the growth of cells, reparation, and protection. But too much sunlight without UVB protection can cause skin aging. That is why when you’re out basking in the sun’s glow, you must apply an SPF 100 sunscreen first. You should also do the same if you’re out of your home for the majority of the day.

4. Eat healthily

Food is your greatest ally for healthy skin. You should avoid overindulging in foods that are high in sugar, sodium, and grease because they can cause acne. It’s okay to eat them as your cheat meal from time to time.

However, your staple should be fruits and vegetables that are rich in nutrients. Include zinc-packed red meat, fish, poultry, nuts, and shellfish in your diet as well for supple skin.

5. DIY body scrubs and exfoliators

Using ready-made products for exfoliating your skin is good because it’s easy to use and removes dead skin cells for better nutrient absorption. However, they are mostly expensive and some contain harmful ingredients.

DIY exfoliators and body scrubs can be made from the ingredients in your kitchen. You can also guarantee they are safe for your skin because they can be eaten. Check out these recipes for DIY exfoliators and body scrubs.

6. Get proper scheduled sleep

Sleep is very important for your skin. During your bedtime rest, blood flow increases for your skin’s rebuilding of collagen and repair due to UV damage. That’s why a lot of women who benefit from a good night’s sleep get fewer wrinkles, age spots, and dark circles.

It’s important that you follow a consistent sleeping schedule and aim to get 7 to 9 hours of sleep every night.

7. Sleep in silk and satin pillowcases

The rubbing of your face on a cotton pillowcase creates a lot of friction that could irritate and inflame your skin. Silk and satin pillowcases are soft and smooth that are very gentle for sleeping even for the most sensitive skin types. They also absorb less moisture and dirt which prevents acne.

8. Avoid stress

If you thought skin problems are only caused by environmental factors, then you’re wrong. Stressful events can cause a lot of imbalances in your body which leads to hives, acne, eczema, and rashes. Do your best to keep a calm head by practicing mindfulness.

Remember that there are also a lot of outdoor factors that can ruin your skin’s health. One common agent is pollution. You should stay away from industrial areas that produce a lot of toxic smog. Like smoking, these harmful environments don’t only pose serious health risks but can also reduce your skin’s firm and supple state.
