How Can You Hold Yourself Accountable to Your Audition Goals?
Better dancing, a toned-up body, clearer skin, high kicks… These are just some of the many goals that you may have as an aspiring dancer or professional cheerleader.
At the start of your audition prep journey, you feel super motivated and ready to overcome ANY CHALLENGE. But unexpected changes happen in your schedule. Plans didn’t turn out how you’d hoped!
Now, your biggest obstacle is staying consistent with your goals. How do you remain accountable to them so that you can show up on the big day 100% confident that you’ve done your part?
Here are 6 tips to follow.
1. Write everything down.
Are you a visual person? Do you often lose track of what you need to accomplish? I’m sure you’ve heard people say that writing down your goals will increase your likelihood to stick with them. You may think it doesn’t work, but study shows that it does.
Writing things down will help you recall what’s really important in your life. You can write your goals on a white board in your room or use sticky notes and stick them on your wall. Make sure that your goals are visible to you each day.

2. Create the right mindset first thing in the morning.
The moment you wake up, you need to follow a routine that will put you in the right mindset. It’s easy to start the day being preoccupied with worries that can affect your workouts and ability to make time for other audition-related prep activities.
I recommend reading some morning affirmations. Keep a list of affirmations in a special notebook. That way, you can access those affirmations in the morning and be filled with a peaceful, positive energy.
3. Set micro goals.
Tiny goals make a huge difference in helping you stay accountable no matter the circumstances. Why? Because these mini-goals are easy to meet.
A good example of a micro goal to increase your fitness level is making sure that you get to exercise 15 minutes each day. You can set micro goals for the day or week. Whatever your micro goals are, make sure that they’re tied to your long-term goals.
4. Get an accountability buddy.
Partner up with somebody who’s more disciplined than you are. Your accountability buddy doesn’t have to be an aspiring pro cheerleader; she can simply be a friend who’s also working hard to get fitter - or someone who’s into dancing. Find someone you’d find hard to disappoint because you look up to that person!
5. Always educate yourself (learn and try new things).
If you want to increase your progress and always feel a sense of accomplishment, it’s important to develop your knowledge and experience. Challenge yourself to learn new dance techniques. Level up your usual workout routine. Read books or listen to podcasts that will radically improve your attitude and mindset.
6. Create a dream board.
Another technique to remind yourself of your audition goals is to make your own vision board. Your vision board should contain images and notes that portray your FUTURE.
Print out pictures of pro cheerleaders and post them on the board. You can also include quotations and tips provided by current or former squad members (which you’ve read on their bio page). Just place anything that inspires you to always do your best - there are no rules.
Final Thoughts
If you make audition success a priority, then have faith that you can make the team. Doing the work can be intimidating, but believe me, once you’ve done your part for the day, you’ll experience a great sense of accomplishment. Remember: Accountability leads to success!
