How to Create a Pro Cheer Workout Space at Home
Sometimes, going out for a run or to the gym isn’t possible. But just because you can’t, doesn’t mean you won’t find a way to get your fitness needs for the day met. As an aspiring professional cheerleader currently training for an audition, having a workout area at home a.k.a “home gym” is a good idea. You don’t need much - just enough space that allows you to move and some essential items.
But first, what are the benefits of having a home gym?
- Save money in the long run. A home gym is cheaper than signing up for a gym membership because your home gym will pay for itself. You can even save money on equipment by buying on craigslist.
- Convenience. If you work from home, you can spend your breaks by working out for the auditions. Getting to and from the gym is a lot of time wasted. This is especially true if you already have a busy schedule.
- No room for excuses. What’s your excuse for not working out? With a home gym, you have no reason to not get a good workout. Excuses like “It’s nearly dark,” or “I’m going to be stuck in traffic again.”
Find an unused space or a spot that can double as your workout space.
What area in your home can be utilized as a home gym? Find a space that allows you to jump, lunge, sprint, and jog without you accidentally bumping into furniture. Possible areas include an unused bedroom, office, or patio. Make sure that the floor isn’t slippery. Put some rubber mats.
Add some greenery.
Create an environment that lets you focus by adding elements of nature. Add a few low-maintenance indoor plants. These will help clear up your mind as you workout.
What essentials should you have?
Your equipment entirely depends on the kinds of workouts you’ll be doing. Regardless of your routine, be sure to get a large mirror (to ensure proper form) and a pair of comfortable shoes. Below are some pieces of equipment you may have:
1. Dumbbells - These are great for toning certain areas of your body like your arms, chest, shoulders, and back. Dumbbells build muscle mass and help you gain strength.
2. Weighted jump rope - This improves your coordination and tones your entire body. You can burn plenty of calories with this convenient cardio tool.
3. Resistance bands - Bands add tension to your workouts, thereby speeding up fat loss. They consume almost no space at all. Use resistance bands for stretching, yoga, and HIIT workouts.
4. Flat bench - Use a flat bench for chest presses, V-ups, leg raise, and other ab exercises.
5. Stationary bike or elliptical - Either piece of equipment is effective in working out your cardiovascular system. It’s safer for the joints (compared to running or jogging) and boosts your endurance.
Don’t forget to make the perfect playlist! Workout tunes get you moving. And oh, write down what you’ve accomplished in your journal. Check out my article on journaling.
