How to Handle the Pressure of Pro Cheer and Dance Auditions
Auditions are near. You start to feel the stress and pressure of giving your best performance. What if you shut down and hit the panic button? What if you don’t get accepted into your dream team this year? A pro cheer or dance audition can bring out the best and worst in you.
Read on to learn how you can effectively cope with auditions. Here’s what you need to do to reduce your stress and increase your chances of success.
1. Be well-prepared.
When you know that you have done your best by preparing in advance, you develop more confidence. Advance preparation lets you get a full picture of the things you need to do. Maybe you need to perfect your dance technique or double time with your fitness.

2. Make sure you don’t miss anything out.
One of the reasons why candidates panic is that they realize they’ve missed small but important details like their attire, what to bring, how to wear their hair, or the preliminary audition process. You can avoid this situation by carefully reading the audition details provided by your dance team on their website. You don’t want to be cramming or calling a family member to bring your identification to the audition venue at the last minute.
3. Remind yourself to have fun.
Remember: This isn’t a matter of life or death. It may be your biggest dream to become a professional cheerleader, but not making the team on the first try is normal. So instead of letting fear overwhelm you, make it your goal to ENJOY THE PROCESS!
4. Visualize the audition often.
Visualization is as important as reciting positive affirmations. Do this often: Spend a few minutes thinking about actual audition day scenarios - you introducing yourself to the audience and performing a dance routine in a small group. You need to visualize success scenarios. Avoid thinking about losing control or forgetting a line or dance move!
5. Calm down by breathing deeply.
Deep breathing is an effective strategy to lower your stress instantly. Stress and anxiety alters your breathing by making it irregular and shallow. But when you breathe deeply through your diaphragm, more air flows throughout your body. Take deep breaths anytime you feel stressed - during preparations and on the audition day.
6. Sign-up for prep classes.
Most professional cheerleading and dance teams offer optional prep classes that teach you dance technique, tips on hair and makeup, and nutrition advice. Even if these classes are optional, they take your preparation to the NEXT LEVEL. Here at Pro Cheer Life, we post audition updates from each NFL and NBA team and include links that lead to their prep classes. Make sure you check out our posts on our blog section.
