One Way to Practice Self-Care? Dance It Out!

Dancing has been a part of our identity as humans since the beginning of time. Some tribes danced as a part of a religious ritual. Others did to attract a mate. Whatever dance they performed, it all meant one thing - every movement had an important purpose.

The same could be said in our era. We dance to have fun. We dance as a form of competition. And we also dance for our wellbeing. Here are 10 reasons why you should do it regularly and not just for audition practice or pro cheer squad rehearsals.

1. Dancing improves your cardiorespiratory condition

Like working out, dancing is a form of exercise that gets your blood pumping. It also increases the amount of oxygen that flows to your muscles. The result is a lowered risk of heart disease with an additional boost in stamina and endurance.

2. Dancing increases your strength

Most dance genres require you to stand on one hand or foot. By practicing these routines regularly, you increase the ability of your muscles to handle your own body weight using one limb. You become stronger in accomplishing daily tasks without the need for any assistance.

3. Dancing improves your posture

A woman’s posture is part of her overall beauty. Since dancing requires you to follow a lot of figures to perform techniques properly, you’ll be able to use what you’ve learned to walk straight and proud. Ballerinas are particularly known for this.

4. Dancing is a good stress reliever

As mentioned, dancing is a form of exercise that releases endorphins, oxytocin, and serotonin. Through regular grooving, your mood is boosted making you feel happier during the day and able to sleep well at night.

5. Dancing is a good activity for weight management

Where there is sweat, so are fat and calorie burn. Did you know that dancing burns more calories than running, lifting, or cycling? If you want to lose or maintain weight, dancing on a daily basis is a fun way to achieve it. The best part? You get to hone your talents and skills in the process.

6. Dancing improves your balance

All dances teach your body to be comfortable or get accustomed to the different kinds of motion. It also teaches you how gravity and flooring affect your stride. This in turn improves your brain and muscle coordination making you less prone to tripping over.

7. Dancing boosts your cognitive capabilities

To dance well, you need to identify auditory cues, count, and execute specific movements depending on the elements of a song. As a result, your memory retention improves because you’ll learn to quickly associate two unrelated elements altogether when needed.

8. Dancing improves your flexibility

Before one starts to dance, warming up through stretching should be done. Dance moves vary as well. Some make you move your limbs at full-range motion. Others require you to bend over and back. But they all have one common result, and it’s that they stretch your muscles and loosen your joints to help you move your body parts in any direction with ease.

9. Dancing increases your energy

Because dancing burns a lot of calories and fats, it trains your body to increase energy output by boosting your metabolism. You’ll notice that you don’t tire easily when tending to your responsibilities. Walking for long distances is also easier to do and the need for midday naps is reduced.

10. Dancing improves your social skills

Joining a dance class helps you make a lot of friends and widen your social circle. Once we belong to a group and establish a deep connection, we feel better about ourselves. And you know what feeling good about yourself means - a higher self-esteem and self-confidence.

Always remember to stretch if you plan to dance longer. This way, you can prevent yourself from sustaining any injuries. After your dance session, cool yourself down to ease soreness and speed up muscle recovery.
