Pro Cheer Beauty: Rules to Follow for Great Hair

Before you perform at the arena, you count on your hair styling tools to make your hair beautiful. But off the arena, pro cheerleaders are reminded to maintain a gorgeous appearance. As hair is your crowning glory, it’s only fit to follow healthy rules that will keep your hair looking its best.

1. Start with the right hair products

You may have heard that it’s bad to wash your hair every day and that’s right. But when you do wash your hair, you need to be mindful of the products you use to cleanse your hair.

Steer clear of clarifying shampoos that are designed to strip hair of healthy oils and color.

If you use hair spray or styling mousse, cleansing conditioner won’t be able to remove the product residue from those styling products making your hair less flexible and prone to breakage.

For your conditioner, look for ingredients like “polyquaternium” or “methicone” to coat your hair better and protect it from heat.

2. Rethink the way you use heating tools

Excessive use of flat irons and blow dryers on a high setting will lead to hair looking rough and dry. Heat can also cause split ends.

Air-dry your hair as often as possible and only use a blow dryer for special occasions like charity events, fundraisers, and of course when you’re at the arena.

You can also use a blow dryer on a low setting.

When styling your hair, switch to cold air towards the end of your session to close the hair shaft. This can leave your hair looking smoother and shinier.

Opt for a strengthening hair serum as well before exposing your hair to heat. Start from the ends and work your way up towards the roots. This will protect your hair from damage from direct heat.

3. Go for naturally shiny hair

You may have used shine sprays or serums before your performance but for your regular hair routine, those are not the best options.

Choose pure oils instead like almond oil, coconut oil, argan oil, or extra-virgin olive oil. These can make your hair softer and stronger so you can confidently work your hair during your performance.

Once or up to twice a week of using oils can provide the nourishment healthy hair needs. It is best to apply the hair on the scalp, leave it for 30 minutes, and wash with warm water. Use cold water for your final rinse to flatten the hair cuticles.

4. Consider sun protection for your hair too

We put sunscreen on our face and body before we head out in the morning or afternoon sun. But, what about our hair? UV rays can damage our hair too, taking away its moisture and leaving it dull. If you colored your hair, the treatment will fade fast under the sun too.

Wear a hat when you go out or seek shade from an umbrella.

5. Don’t skip washing hair altogether

If you regularly use dry shampoo to skip a good shower, you may be doing more harm than good for your hair.

Hair can collect dust and dirt, and get exposed to sweat and pollution. The buildup of dirt and other pollutants can lead to clogged follicles that can cause hair loss. Dry shampoo can even add to the buildup.

It is best to wash your hair with warm water and don’t brush your hair while it is still wet.

Finally, don’t forget to brush your hair multiple times a day to get rid of debris, tangles, and dead hairs.

To great hair days

Today’s market offers an overwhelming selection of shampoos, conditioners, serums, heating tools, and hair styling products all promising to make our hair beautiful. But what we should consider is how we can make our hair not just healthy-looking but real healthy hair from the roots to the ends.

Follow the tips above regularly for healthy hair while you’re performing at the arena as well as when you’re living your daily life.
