Pro Cheer Tryouts: 13 Most Common Questions, Answered!

Despite reading your dream team’s audition info, you’re still wondering what you need to prepare for the audition day. No worries, curiosity is a good sign that you’re willing to do what it takes to succeed. Here are the answers to some of your common audition questions so that you’ll rock the day when it comes!

1. What is most important, dance skill or appearance?

Judges look for the complete package. This means that both are equally important to increase your chances of making the team. Keep in mind that you are competing against other women who work hard to excel in all areas.

2. Is there an age limit for joining the auditions?

Yes and no. Most squad auditions won’t accept candidates that are younger than 18 years old. For the older age limit, there is none. What’s important is you look young, fit, and healthy. If you’re 40 but look like 29 then you’re viable to be a squad candidate.

3. Are dance prep clinics required?

No, but they are a huge factor to make you pass the auditions. In your dream team’s dance clinic, you can learn what might be the best dance style to showcase and impress the judges.

4. What dance style is best to showcase for the audition?

There is no particular dance style that would impress judges as their judging criteria will differ. As long as you display tremendous athleticism, flexibility, and endurance, you’re bound to score a lot of points. You can learn all styles but it’s best to master one.

However, here are some top tier dance styles that are likely to score higher points:

  • Arena Dance
  • Jazz
  • Bellydance
  • Latin Ballroom
  • Hip-Hop
  • Bollywood
  • Zumba
  • Broadway
  • Disco

5. Should you take gymnastics?

It depends on your current budget, flexibility and athleticism level. If you’re not quite strong, nimble and flexible in performing common cheerleader routines, then gymnastics class is a good way to improve those. Also, if you can’t afford it, don’t push yourself.

6. What makeup style should you wear for the auditions?

You have to research this online. Take a good look at the makeup style of current members in your dream squad’s webpage. Find a member who has similar features as you. If there’s one, then try to copy and use that style as a guide.

7. Is jewelry ideal for tryouts?

Large accessories are fine as long as they don’t steal the spotlight from your face. Rocks are also good if they don’t dazzle the judges to the point of distraction. Lastly, make sure that when you wear jewelry on the day, they won’t fall or fly off.

8. What are possible distractions that you should be aware of?

Procrastination will prevent you from achieving your fitness goals by messing with your workout and sleep. Cravings can affect your diet. But the worst of all, discouragement will drive you to quit. No matter what happens, stay positive and have self-discipline.

9. What’s the ideal body figure?

Not too fat and not too skinny. For the best guide, look at the members of your dream team’s cheer squad. Beauty comes in different sizes, but in the world of professional cheerleading, there are standards to follow.

10. What should you wear for the auditions?

Anything that isn’t drag or too fabulous. Simple gym wear will do or a personalized style. Take note that you can wear anything appropriate with complimenting colors. You can also wear clothes that emphasize your movements. Most importantly, be sure to read your team’s audition info regarding what to wear.

11. How do I deal with skin imperfections?

If you have acne or blemishes that could be seen during the auditions, the best way to conceal them is through makeup. Full-coverage foundation effectively covers up breakouts. Find the best product for your skin. At the same time, eat healthily, drink more water, and reduce your stress to keep your skin calm.

12. Is self-confidence necessary?

Yes, you will be interviewed by judges in front of other candidates and audiences. Shyness has no place on the audition day. You will be perceived as unprepared or not serious so practice your public speaking and boost your confidence today!

13. What’s the difference between NFL and NBA cheer squads?

NBA squads are more of sporty and athletic dance routines. NFL squads focus on jazzy and glamourous dance styles. However, both teams have the same candidate requirements such as abilities and talents.
