The Best Skin Care Tips for Winter

Winter is a season that has a much more different effect on your pro cheer skin. If summer makes you sweat or produce natural oils excessively, cold weather does the opposite. Although winter has more anti-aging benefits due to the cold wind, the moisture from your skin is sucked out at a higher rate than during the three other seasons.

To keep your skin beautiful and healthy throughout the fourth season, you need to change how you approach skincare. These are the tips you should remember.

1. Stay natural

Good news for those who have normal and oily skin, winter is the season when you can choose to skip applying a moisturizer. Women with dry skin should continue using oil-based moisturizers. Natural skin oils are the best protection for the dry cold air. However, be sure to always cleanse your skin before going to bed as dirt may still build up and lead to acne.

2. Run a humidifier at home

Just because the air is warmer in your home than the outside doesn’t mean it’s humid. Using HVACs during winter makes the indoor air even drier. It’s best to counter the dryness by running a humidifier. If your home’s heating system has a humidifying function, turn it on.

3. Wear a lighter sunscreen

UV rays can still penetrate the clouds during gray winter days. Sunlight is also reflected by the fallen snow which will hit you from multiple angles. The good thing is that fewer amounts of UV rays are scattered. You can use sunscreen with an SPF level close to 30.

4. Lower the HVAC thermostat

As mentioned, indoor heating makes the air drier. The hotter the setting, the dryer the air is. A good rule of thumb for indoor heating during winter is using a thermostat setting that’s comfortably cool or warm (68°F to 72°F).

5. Limit shower time and temperature

Aside from the cold outdoor air, too much water heat and time spent in the shower can strip your skin of its natural moisture. If you leave your home without applying a moisturizer, you’re more likely to find your skin flaking throughout the day. It’s highly recommended to bathe in cold or lukewarm water for a maximum of 15 minutes.

6. Wear breathable fabrics for your inner clothing

Rough fabrics such as flannel and wool can worsen dry winter skin. As much as possible, wear your dri-fit apparel as your first layer of clothing before thick clothes. You can also opt for clothes made out of velboa fabric for inner softness and warmth.

7. Go easy on exfoliation

Your skin is already compromised during the winter season due to the dry and cold air. But if you still follow your standard exfoliation schedule, you could make your skin extra sensitive to the weather.

Exfoliation is important for removing dead skin cells and increasing your body’s largest organ to absorb skincare products. However, once a week is enough during this time of the year.

Winter is a few weeks away but it’s important for you to be ready as early as possible. In a future article, we’ll discuss the best skincare products for the season of snow. So stay tuned.
