To Achieve Success, Change Your Identity First

As a former professional cheerleader, I can recall the struggle of trying to adopt the fitness habits and practices of a real pro cheerleader when I first prepared for an NFL dance audition. After trial and error, I finally was able to make my dream team. How did I do it? Answer: I changed my identity.

What does “changing your identity” mean exactly? Why should you become a completely different person if you want TRUE SUCCESS? In this blog post, I share my insights with you. Keep reading.

Remember Visualization? It’s The First Step To Changing Your Identity.

Success all starts with imagination. Let me guess: You picture yourself dancing on the sidelines, attending evening rehearsals, making appearances, and bonding with your cheer sisters. Visualization is such a powerful thing - it allows you to get clear on what you want to become and where you want to be.

The amazing part about visualization is that to the human brain, there is no difference between something that’s imagined to something that’s happening at the moment.

But while visualization is the first important step in reaching your goals, it’s not enough. You need to actually become that “version of you” that you imagine.

Stop Defining Yourself Based On Your Past - Because You Are Capable Of Change.

The problem with most women who dream to become professional cheerleaders and are in the process of preparing for auditions is this… They’re too stuck in the past. Too often, cling to a past identity we’ve created for ourselves - a past identity that includes mistakes, weight loss issues, dramas, self-criticisms, and more.

This “clinging” is the very reason why instead of seeing a total transformation, you experience suffering. You tell yourself, “I’ve never had success in losing weight,” “I’ve always been a bad dancer,” or “I don’t have a flexible body.”

If you want the judges to see you as a potential pro cheerleader, as an ideal squad member, you have to step into that identity. That entails completely forgetting or detaching yourself from your past identity.

It’s amazing to know that you are capable of change. You are naturally evolving into a new person each day - you’re just unaware of it. Once you become more aware of your potential, you understand that there is no need to cling to your failures.

How To Become The Professional Cheerleader You Should Be

Here are the steps you need to take if you want to live your dream. Do these things and you will be surprised with the results.

  • Create and celebrate small wins - As change is a process, it’s important to acknowledge positive behaviors no matter how small they are. Acknowledging these minor wins boosts your motivation and keeps you on the right path.
  • Do the exact opposite - We have certain habits or practices that are tied to our past. Start doing things differently. For example, if you’re used to sleeping in until 8:00 AM, wake yourself up at 5:00 AM to jog. Try to ask yourself, “What are the things that pro cheerleaders do that I am not yet doing?" Dress differently. Behave differently. Speak differently.
  • Stay enthusiastic and interested - Finally, don’t forget to enjoy the process of change. Remind yourself of your WHY and the good things that come as the judges officially call you a professional cheerleader.
