How to Push Beyond Your Limits and Realize Your Pro Cheer Goals
A lot of women who want to become professional cheerleaders do what they can to achieve their dream. They lift weights, engage in cardio regularly, and follow a healthy diet. But after seeing progress at the beginning, things start to get harder. You’re met with resistance and it seems that the universe doesn’t support what you want.
Let me tell you that this is something that’s normal. But in such times, are you able and willing to really push yourself - to go through the struggle until you reach greater heights? If you need help, this post is for you.
Challenge yourself to bigger, harder things.
Going beyond your current limitations entails that you intentionally take harder challenges. There is less growth if you remain in a comfortable zone for the rest of your life. One very specific example of challenging yourself is to add a few more minutes to your workout, more reps until you feel exhausted, and waking up 30 minutes earlier to do a morning run.

Learn from others who’ve been there.

There’s no better person to learn from than a current professional cheerleader. I recommend that you do a little more research to learn about what your dream NFL or NBA cheer squad do.
Instagram and YouTube are the best places where you can watch short videos of their routines. In fact, most pro cheer websites these days feature the auditions that happened in the previous year. Also, in a team member profile, there’s a chance you’ll find a piece of advice on fitness, beauty, or motivation. For example, Chelsea of the Minnesota Vikings dance squad shares her best workout secret which is “finding what works for you and consistency.”
Work on your weaknesses until they become your strengths.
Before you actually become better than your current self, first understand and embrace the reality that nobody’s perfect. We want to be the best in everything pro cheerleading but that’s not possible especially that you’re just starting out! Instead of beating yourself up with negative self-talk, identify weak areas in your pre-audition preparation and bring them to the next level.
Here’s how to tell what your areas that need improvement are:
- What are the things you’ve been putting off or avoiding? Are those your dumbbell lateral lunges? Bicycle crunches?
- Are you receiving similar feedback from your family and friends?
- Look at your past failures and the reason/s why they happened.
Visualize your success.

Do you believe in the immense power of visualization? I do, and so do many elite athletes like Kerri Walsh and Lindsey Vonn. Visualization is simply the process of rehearsing in your mind the things you want to happen. Winning is less likely to happen if all that takes up your mental energy is self-doubt. Positive thoughts increase your levels of confidence and motivation to train more.

Work on a strict timeline.
If you’re not meeting the fitness goals you’ve set for yourself, that’s because you haven’t set deadlines for them. Whether a goal is big or small, deadlines motivate you to complete them. Most importantly, they help you experience small wins along the way and these mini accomplishments keep you going.
One way to work on a deadline is to make sure that at the end of each day, you complete at least 10,000 steps - and you’ll need a pedometer for this. These deadlines should be non-negotiable. As always, track your progress using a journal or health app.
