Top 7 Time Wasters That Prevent You From Focusing on Your Audition Prep
Regardless of whether you have a long or short span of time to prepare for the auditions, you must make good use it. That means keeping your focus. But there are a lot of unavoidable distractions, and most of them even go unnoticed. It’s time to identify what these interruptions are and learn strategies to avoid them.
1. Comparing your accomplishments with those of others
Let’s say that you’ve met and made a friend in dance prep school. You exchange signs of progress in your audition preparation but then you start to realize that person has done more than you.
Don’t make comparisons with your accomplishments. Keep in mind that you have unique strengths. Your body works differently from others. Stick to the plan you’ve made. Stay at your own pace. Slow and still finishes the race.
2. Doing multiple audition prep tasks at once
Multi-tasking your audition prep tasks can be overwhelming. When you get bombarded by activities, you get exhausted and end up being knocked out for the day.
Schedule your activities by the day’s portions. For example, dedicate your mornings for workouts. On afternoons, practicing public speaking. Assign a set of activities each day of the week. Think about when you’re going to dance, research your dream team, and answer Q&As.
3. Procrastinating your audition prep tasks
A minute of delaying your audition prep tasks can lead to an hour of doing nothing. Ditch this habit of procrastination and stop making excuses to skip activities. Establish a schedule now with a reminder and follow it strictly. When the alarm goes, do these activities immediately as if you have no choice.

4. Online distractions
Web surfing is your worst enemy for staying focused. It can be social media or a video streaming platform. Your phone, laptop, and TV should help you prepare for the auditions, not hinder you. You might find a random video of a cute animal then end up with a cute animal watching spree. All it took was a 20-second clip to waste 2 hours of your makeup application practice time.
Exercise discipline within yourself. If you’re in the company of others, ask a friend to hold your phone for you and have them return it UNLESS you’re done with your audition prep activity.
5. Dwelling over past mistakes
Nobody is perfect. Everyone commits failures. But instead of brooding over them, move on from and consider them a lesson. Try harder and do better next time. You weren't able to finish your workout routines in time? Slept late last night? Put your phone away before bed so you can stick with your sleeping schedule today.
6. Saying yes to all demands of life
We all have responsibilities to fulfill. Some of these demands can be time-consuming. Whenever possible, say no to demands that could mess with your schedule. You can also opt to do them later. Use procrastination properly. If a friend calls inviting you over for coffee and your schedule says a false-lash application practice, politely decline or say, “Okay sure, but can we do this at [your desired time] instead?”
7. Being a perfectionist
Another phenomenon that eats up valuable time is perfectionism. “The conditions aren’t right,” that’s what you would say. You shouldn’t really obsess over doing this flawlessly. Do what you can now with what available resources you have. Can’t work out because the gym is closed? Do some bodyweight training. No running shoes for outdoor jogging? Perform flexibility exercises.
Your time for audition prep can easily be wasted because you reason instead of act. Take it easy, just relax. Don’t pressure yourself to say yes to the demands of life. Never allow external pleasures distract you from achieving your pro cheer dreams. Follow your audition prep schedule and you’ll be just fine!
