Try These 5 Simple Remedies for Dry Hair
Dry hair isn’t just brittle, but it also makes it hard for you to style it. A lot of things can contribute to dryness and two reasons (common in professional cheerleading) include chemically treating or dying your hair and using hair styling tools like curling irons and straighteners.
The good news is, in many cases, you can deal with dry hair effectively with a few helpful strategies, which include simple lifestyle changes. If you’re dealing with this beauty problem, check out these tips so you can have your best hair whether you’re on and off the field.

1. Wash your hair less often.
This tip applies to you if you have very dry hair. By washing your hair only once a week, you’ll be able to preserve the natural oils in your scalp. Keep in mind that moisturized hair doesn’t just look less frizzy, but it’s also less likely to break.
2. Condition with olive oil.
If you have both dry and thick hair, olive oil can work wonders. Its elements include oleic acid and palmitic acid which possess softening qualities, which is why they’re used as emollients in some hair care products. To start, prepare one tablespoon of olive oil (or ¼ cup if you have thick and long hair), then apply it to your hair and scalp. Massage your scalp thoroughly and leave it on for about 15 minutes. Then properly rinse with water.
3. Make a hair mask.
While you can obviously buy a leave-in hair repair mask — preferably one with healthy proteins — you also have the option to make one at home. Combining one cup of milk with one tablespoon of honey and leaving the mixture in your hair for 15 minutes can soften and support your hair.
4. Eat a diet rich in omega-3s.
It’s no secret that a diet that’s rich in whole foods can supply the right nutrients to support hair health, along with other benefits like better skin and weight loss. When it comes to hair nutrition, omega-3s may help reduce hair loss and improve hair growth. Natural sources of omega-3s include fatty fish, walnuts, and broccoli.
5. Use only mild shampoos.
Mild shampoos work well for preventing further damage to dry and brittle hair since they don’t remove all your hair’s natural oils. Some mild shampoos even contain helpful ingredients like zinc pyrithione to prevent flaking and biotin to increase hair growth, which is beneficial if you’re looking to grow your hair faster for an upcoming audition.

Keep these simple remedies on your list — and even share them with your friends or pro cheer sisters who may be dealing with dry hair. In addition to these methods, protecting your hair from too much sun exposure by wearing a hat when you go outdoors is important. Finally, if you suspect a health condition, consider speaking with your doctor.
