Make These DIY Hair Masks to Repair and Strengthen Damaged Hair

Hair damage has become a common problem in the world of women and beauty. As a matter of fact, Head and Shoulders made a statistic about it back in 2013. It found that 91% of American women do things that damage their hair on a daily basis, with or without their knowledge.

Not much has changed since then. We still bleach, dye, use styling tools, wear tight ponytails, and forget to follow a good hair care routine from time to time. Some of us even tend to ignore that stress and working out or dancing under the sun also contribute to hair damage.

Although most of these factors are unavoidable, there are a few things we can do in the pro cheer community to minimize or prevent hair damage. One of these strategies is applying a hair mask at least once or twice a week.

But store-bought masks are expensive. Which is why instead of doing a product review, we’ll share some DIY hair mask recipes you can make at home and use as your conditioner alternative.

1. Banana and Oil Mask

Dryness is the most common type of hair problem. It’s caused by prolonged sun exposure and frequent use of styling tools. Fortunately, you can mitigate these heat-born problems by mashing a ripe banana and mixing it with a teaspoon of almond, olive, or coconut oil.

2. Protein Mask

Brittle hair strands are a sign of a lack of protein. To make a protein hair mask, mix egg yolk with a cup of pureed strawberries and 3 tablespoons of olive oil. The strawberry and olive oil will make your hair shiny and moisturized for the day.

3. Flaxseeds and Lemon Juice Mask

Flax seeds are known to be a rich source of protein and omega-3 fatty acids. When applied to your hair, these compounds make your strands thicker and more elastic. Add concentrated or squeezed lemon juice to your concoction and you’ll also prevent dandruff.

To make the mask, you need to: Soak a quarter cup of flaxseeds in water overnight. When morning comes, add two cups of water to the flaxseeds and boil them. Once the concoction thickens, reduce the stove flame and squeeze the juice out of half a lemon into the boiling flaxseed.

After 4 to 5 minutes, turn off the stove and let your concoction cool. Add a few drops of any essential oil before applying the hair mask.

4. Cinnamon and Coconut

Like flaxseeds, coconut oil is also rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Mix one teaspoon of it and another teaspoon of ground cinnamon. Cinnamon stimulates blood circulation in your scalp. As a result, you’ll have a great concoction for treating breakages, thinning hair, and reduced hair growth.

5. Honey, Lemon, and Aloe Vera Mask

Got an oily scalp and greasy hair? No problem, half a teaspoon of lemon juice contains acid that breaks down the excess oil and grease on your crowning glory. Two tablespoons of honey will kill the bad bacteria on your scalp. Lastly, a tablespoon of aloe vera will rehydrate your hair, signaling your scalp there’s no need to release excess oil for moisture.

6. Mayonnaise Mask

If you want a hair mask without all the mixing process, simply use mayonnaise. This product has been used for generations and is the quintessential example of a deep conditioning hair mask. It contains protein from eggs and oil (either canola or olive) that softens, strengthens, and moisturizes your hair while making it bouncy.

When you apply your DIY hair mask, start from your scalp. Massage the mixture thoroughly on your head. Then evenly spread the mask from the roots of your hair to the tip. Let the mixture sit for 15 to 45 minutes while wearing a shower cap. Then rinse your hair with warm water. There’s no need to shampoo but you can choose to do so.
