Essential Hair Rules for Pro Cheerleaders

One of the most important aspects of being a pro cheerleader for the NFL and NBA is having hair that looks great on you while complementing your team. During the auditions, judges will include your hairstyle in the scoring cards as it helps determine how well you take care of yourself and may look in the photos.
With that said, here are the hair standards of pro cheerleading that you should know and follow to increase your chances of making your dream team. They will also help you achieve that “glam” look that your future squad expects.
1. Volume up

It doesn’t matter what texture your hair belongs to as long as it isn’t too thin and flat. Increasing the volume of your strands is important because it lessens your effort to make your hair fly for dramatic dance moves without fully covering your face.
In preparation for the auditions, you should follow a care routine or use volumizing products which add weight and thickness to your hair.
2. Wavy, layered, and glossy are the standards

The main reason wavy, layered, and glossy hairstyles are the standard for pro cheerleaders is that they look glamorously sporty. Straight hairstyles don’t. Better yet, consult with your stylist, visit a salon, or buy some curling instruments that will help you experiment with styles that would best fit you for auditions and live performances.
3. No hair accessories

Why are there no pro cheerleaders that perform with ponytails despite looking sporty? First of all, this isn’t college cheerleading. Second, cheerleaders look mature and professional without any hair accessories. As a result, all auditionees and performers of NFL and NBA teams are mandated to dance with their hair down.
4. Natural is the best

If you don’t know which style you should sport for your pro cheer career, it’s best to choose your natural look. Pro cheer squad management teams don’t discriminate on different natural and cultural hair textures, styles, and colors without proper reason. Some even allow braids.
Although there are exceptions such as the aforementioned straight hair. It’s all about the practicality of hair movement control for dancing and the squad’s blended aesthetic. They keep this rule to help you perform your dance without problems while being able to look beautiful.
5. Match freedom with fit and function

Sometimes your natural hairstyle won’t help you achieve that pro cheerleader’s look. This is common in women with long and straight black hair. It’s okay to get your hair dyed and cut as long as the color and light fits your skin tone, body type, and face shape.
Speaking about hair dyeing, don’t go for unnatural colors. The goal of dyeing your hair for pro cheerleading is to make yourself look good and stand out beautifully along with the rest of the squad.
6. Consult for cuts first

Once you’re a bonafide pro cheerleader, you’ll eventually grow tired of having the same hairstyle, especially if you’ve been wearing it for months. But before going to the salon for a style change, you should consult with your coach or team manager. Show them the style you want. They might even suggest a better look.
However, this would be highly unlikely as most pro cheer teams are sponsored by beauticians and beauty companies.
Recommended hairstyles for pro cheerleaders can change depending on the trends a squad management wants. It’s best to check with the photocards of your dream team’s members to get an idea of which hairstyle would fit you that they like.
