Pro Cheer Prep Advice: How to Start Your Day With Self-Confidence
Self-confidence is a topic that often comes up as aspiring pro cheerleaders and dancers prepare themselves for an audition. Even people who are not candidates struggle with a lack of self-confidence.
Let me ask you these questions:
Do you feel somehow scared that auditions are fast approaching? Are you afraid that you might not measure up - that other candidates are much better than you? Are you sensitive to criticism, including constructive criticism?
First of all, you need to know that you're not alone! And it's easy to compare yourself to others especially if you're not satisfied with your performance.
The biggest consequence of having a low self-confidence is that you back out of an audition. (You'll never be able to experience the actual process and get a chance to make the team! Because even if you don't make the team, you still get to bring home valuable lessons.)
In this article, I want to share four rituals that will help you start the day feeling confident. Confidence is built over time and with the right habits. Start with the list below.
Make a decision to become positive.
Our minds have a default belief system, and this belief system is explains why we think the way we do. If you often gravitate towards negativity, then it's so easy to be criticize and feel upset. As you wake up in the morning, you need to decide to be positive. Tell yourself, "No matter what happens today, I choose positivity. I will not entertain thoughts that bring me down."
Stay on top of things by planning.
Every candidate who made the team knows how important it is to be prepared. And guess what? You cannot prepare well if you don't have a plan.
Each morning, spend 10 minutes to plan out your routine for the day. What are you going to do to improve for the audition? When will you do it? For how long? (Let's say that today is Wednesday. You could plan to do a 20-minute elliptical workout plus a 10-minute strength training workout starting at 5:00 pm.)
Remember: Whenever you plan, you set yourself up for WINNING!
Practice sitting up straight and walking tall.
Yes, don't start the day slouching! As you rise from bed to get a cup of coffee, stand up tall. This simple act will remind you that you're on a mission to conquer the day. Good posture gives you confidence in your thoughts. You may not realize it, but your posture affects the way you think about yourself.

Follow a morning gratitude ritual.
I highly encourage you to appreciate everything good in your life. Don't save gratitude for the big wins. Recite out loud or write down the top things you are thankful for today - the weather, a good night's sleep, and your healthy breakfast. Be sure to include things that are worth appreciating about yourself - the progress you've made in dancing, your smile, and your passion to fulfill your dreams.
These simple shifts in your morning routine can dramatically change your self-confidence. But you need to be consistent. Embrace positivity, plan, stand tall (literally) for confidence, and appreciate everything around you - including yourself!
