What Are the Best Fruits to Eat for Your Weight Loss Journey?

Fruits are great alternatives on days you want to eat sweet treats or just to reward yourself for small wins. But like pastries, sugary drinks, chocolates, ice creams, and gummies, they too can contain a lot of sugar that can lead to weight gain.

Luckily for us, there are fruits with a lower glycemic index — meaning, they don’t contain a lot of sugar that would spike your blood glucose levels and are safe to eat while following a weight loss program.

These fruits also have additional nutrients that provide health and beauty benefits. Read on to know more about them.

1. Cherries

Although quite rare due to having a short growing season, cherries are one of the best fruits you can eat. They are sweet but have a low glycemic index score of 20. In addition to that, they also contain antioxidants that boost your immune system.

2. Grapefruit

Another sweet fruit that would boost your immune system is the vitamin C-packed grapefruit. It has a glycemic index score of 25 and is best consumed as a snack.

3. Apples

With a glycemic index score of 39, apples are considered to be the best fruit to satisfy cravings at any time of day. It’s also a fruit that helps feed good gut bacteria to improve your overall health.

4. Oranges

Like grapefruits, oranges are also packed with vitamin C. They are cousins in the citrus genus after all. The differences are that oranges have more fibre and are sweeter making them good for squeezing into a juice.

5. Grapes

Grapes are the highest of the low glycemic fruits on this list. But that doesn’t mean they should be your last choice. In fact, grapes score less on the glycemic load than cherries. Glycemic load score includes the measurement of the overall carbohydrates found in a fruit.

In terms of nutritional benefits, grapes are a good source of vitamin B6 — an essential nutrient to improve brain function while regulating hormones responsible for your mood.

6. Peaches

Each serving of peaches contains 10 vitamins and has the property of helping your skin retain more moisture improving its texture. This fruit is best eaten along with yogurt as their flavors complement each other. You can also make a peach smoothie as long as you use alternative ingredients that have less sugar and unhealthy fat.

7. Plums

Plums are relatives of peaches in the stone fruit family together with cherries. However, unlike peaches and prunes, plums have a lower glycemic index and load score making them the healthiest among the three. Remember not to choose dried plums as they have more carbohydrates due to the water content removed.

A lot of natural foods are healthy and can aid in weight loss only if you consume them in moderation. So keep a conscious effort to never overeat the fruits you’ve bought. One thing to remember is to never eat while facing a screen as you’ll stuff yourself mindlessly when focused on other things.
