5 Tips That Help Protect Color-Treated Hair

It doesn’t matter if you have dyed your hair black, blonde, or brunette. Colored hair needs proper attention if you want to maintain its beautiful appearance. Since chemicals from the dye have penetrated your locks, not caring for it will likely result in problems like damage, breakage, and dullness. You wouldn’t want to learn things that hard way!

In this article, we’re going to share five stylist-approved tips that pro cheerleaders and dancers can use to keep their color-treated hair healthy and vibrant.

1. Don’t wash freshly colored hair right away.

A common mistake is washing hair immediately after it has been colored. A good rule of thumb is to wait for 72 hours or 3 days before putting on shampoo. Doing this will allow the cuticle layer to fully close, which results in longer lasting hair color.

2. Shampoo less frequently.

Remember that each time you shampoo your hair, you’re also washing away hair color. You’ve probably heard the advice to shampoo your hair less frequently and limit it to only two to three times a week. During in-between days, you can simply apply a conditioner or a color-safe shampoo. Alternatively, you can wear a shower cap to protect your colored hair while showering.

3. Opt for cool or lukewarm showers

High water temperatures can cause your hair color to fade by lifting the outer cuticle layer. This is why, in addition to avoiding hot water, you also need to minimize your use of curling irons, hair straighteners, and heat styling tools. Otherwise, be sure to use a heat protectant spray or serum. If you love hot showers, shampoo with slightly warm water instead to cleanse your hair while avoiding unnecessary fading.

4. Limit your exposure to sea water

Colored or bleached hair that’s exposed to salt water or sea water becomes susceptible to dryness, tangles, split ends, and breakage. If you spend the day at the beach, remember to wash your hair with fresh water immediately after swimming in the sea to remove the salt, debris, and dirt that got stuck in your hair.

5. Wait 4-6 weeks before having another color treatment

Some sources have different recommendations on how often to dye your hair. However, one thing is for sure: Coloring it too often makes it prone to damage. A good rule of thumb is to wait at least 4 weeks before returning to the salon for another color refresh. Also, people who have dyed their hair to a much lighter color may need extra attention to prevent their natural hair from showing through at the roots.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, remember that colored hair requires maintenance to keep it looking healthy and stunning. In addition, don’t ignore simple hair care tips like regular trimming and eating a nutrient-dense diet. We hope that these tips will come in handy for anyone who needs help with hair care.
