Pro Cheer Audition Advice: How to Conquer Stage Fright and Improve Your Presentation

Performance anxiety, commonly known as stage fright, happens to anyone who's about to perform in front of an audience. A lot of aspiring professional cheerleaders struggle with stage fright, and you don't have to be ashamed of it.

However, it is important that you're able to conquer stage fright before the actual audition day because if not,  it will take a huge toll on your self-confidence and performance. If you need my best advice, here are 4 things you should do:

Really know your stuff.

Preparation is key!!! If you have been reading my blogs, you'll notice that I keep mentioning audition prep. The earlier you can start mastering your material for the auditions, the more likely you are to show up confident. Master your dancing. Know what to say to the judges when introducing yourself. Know how to deliver your answers during the interview round.

Always use the mirror to improve your presentation.

Consider the mirror your best friend in this case. Looking at yourself in the mirror to see how you perform allows you to tweak your performance in real-time. Got it? I used to practice in front of a huge mirror and each time I did, I felt nervous because I was completely aware of my performance weaknesses. I was able to spot gestures or facial expressions that were off. The more I did it, the less nervous I became.

Give your body the care it deserves.

As much as you feel tempted to take a pill or drink alcohol to calm your nerves, don't do it. You need to be alive, alert, and focused on the big day. Do things that will make you feel great about yourself. Get ample sleep at night. Eat foods you love that nourish your body. Talk about your feelings with a friend or family member who won't judge you. Rest when you need to.

Address any negative perceptions you have about yourself.

It doesn't matter how prepared you are if you have a distorted and negative self-perception. I want you to stop telling yourself stories about how things can go wrong, how you are not enough, and how other candidates are better than you. A negative self-image will always stand in the way of success. Refuse to welcome thoughts that create doubt. Also, never forget that to change your negative self-perception, you should start by changing your reality. Do something that makes you feel good about yourself.
