How to Repair Dry and Damaged Hair

As written in my book, almost all dance routines performed in the arena have hair toss movements. So imagine tossing your hair and it doesn’t go where it should due to dryness and damage. Wouldn’t that be a hassle? It also looks unattractive.

That’s why during auditions, judges look for aspiring pro cheerleaders that have lustrous, soft, and full hair. One way for them to test this is closely observing your hair if it moves with you properly as you dance. You’ll also dance with your hair down.

So ask yourself, “Is your hair damaged right now? Is there not enough time to outgrow the damage for the auditions?” If yes, then don’t worry. You still can fix your hair if you follow these tips.

1.  Use better moisturizer brands

Some moisturizer brands say it does the job when all it does is coat your hair with chemicals and make it feel softer. The products that you should really be looking for are the ones with natural oils.

Check the label and contents of the hair moisturizer for argan, glycerin, or sorbitol when buying a bottle.

2.  Apply a heat styling cream

It’s hard to deny that heat is still the best way to make your hair smooth and sleek. But, drying your hair using heat blowers and irons can cause damages. It’s best to apply a heat styling cream while your hair is damp.

Set your drying and styling tools on low if your hair has fine textures. Medium to coarse hair can take slightly higher temperature settings.

3.  Massage with shea butter

Shea butter is a cosmetic ingredient used for centuries. It’s easily absorbed by your hair and moisturizes it from root to scalp. Massage your scalp and brittle hair with the butter. Then use a shower cap for cover. Let it sit for half an hour. Then, rinse with shampoo.

4.  Apply avocado

Dry hair has lost luster. Avocados have essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals to restore that. Buy a ripe avocado and slice it in half. Remove the pit and mash the contents with an egg. Apply the mixture while your hair is wet.

Let it sit for 20 minutes and cover your hair with a shower cap. Then, rinse several times without shampoo. You can also use an oil-based moisturizer brand after rinsing as mentioned from #1.

5.  Condition with olive oil

Another homemade hot oil treatment is to use olive oil. Before rubbing the oil to your hair and scalp. Warm half a cup of olive oil. It is important not to boil the oil to avoid scalding your head and damaging your hair even further.

You must tress your hair into one big braid before wrapping it in plastic and a towel. Then let it sit for 45 minutes. Rinse with shampoo after.

6.  Maintain a hair care routine

A lot of women make the same mistake of not caring for their hair as they do for their skin. At night, it is important to have a hair care routine before going to bed. Brush your hair gently and apply a treatment oil to the ends.

Then, end your day by tying your hair into a ponytail with a silk scrunchie. One last thing, sleep in silk pillowcases. You’ll have less friction as you twist and turn throughout the night. This prevents your hair from drying up.

7.  Eat food for healthy hair growth

Your hair won’t require nourishment from topical treatments alone. You need a change in diet as well. Foods like salmon are rich in protein and will promote faster hair growth. They’re also packed with omega-3 fatty acids which are needed for shiny and strong hair and scalp.

8.  Pay attention to the weather

Too much cold or too much heat strips the moisture away from your hair. You can still prevent further damage and make your treatments effective by wearing a hat or beanie during summers and winters.

9.  Avoid chemicals as much as possible

Hairstyles that involve chemicals such as bleaching, dyeing, perming, and relaxing strip your hair of its natural moisture and weakens your strands. This will end up with your hair being more dry, dull, and frizzy than it already is.

10.  Visit the salon

Let go of those scraggly ends. There’s no point in keeping irreparable hair. Let a stylist trim those dead ends every 6 to 8 weeks. Don’t trim yourself as you might end in a more disastrous hairstyle and more frayed ends.

To keep your hair at its best health, make sure all of your products are made with natural ingredients. Have a hair care routine especially at night. Avoid styling that uses heavy chemicals as much as possible. Lastly, protect your hair from extreme weather conditions.
