How to Stay Fit During Fall and Winter
Autumn has arrived and it could mean a lot of things. First, it signals the coming of colder temperatures which could make us all want to stay at home cozying up in front of the fireplace. Second, the holiday season is coming which means lots of food to eat.
For Halloween, we have the temptations of sweets and it’s followed by the belly-busting foods of Thanksgiving. Finally, a combination of both during Christmas. All of these factors could lead to one effect - weight gain.
So what should you do as a member of the pro cheer community to avoid unwanted weight gain and maintain your figure? Find out below.
1. Buy the right workout gear
Dress dry, not just warm, as fitness experts say. This will help your core temperature stay high when you’re out exercising. Snow and sweat are made of water - a conductor that will suck out your body heat leaving your body cold and inefficient for burning fat.
In worst-case scenarios, you will experience hypothermia. Prevent that by wearing thick layers of clothing that are waterproof and windproof. Pick the right shoes that will provide traction even in snow or wet ground. Lastly, wear a mask that will protect your sinuses.
2. Make a 2-season meal prep plan
It’s important to have a meal prep plan that would prevent you from eating unhealthily. Better yet, stock your pantry today with healthy ingredient alternatives that would last until spring. Read more healthy recipes from our blog page for healthy dishes you can prepare during these special days.
3. Make a schedule and stick to it
It’s challenging to stay fit during the colder months because we’ll all feel lazy due to the temperature. It would even be more difficult without a schedule. We suggest setting an alarm to work out before or after lunch when the sun is high and the surrounding climate is less cold.
4. Stay updated on weather forecasts
Safety is your #1 priority. You don’t want to go out for a jog and get stuck in a snowstorm or blizzard. The best way to prevent this from happening is to wake up early to catch the local morning weather forecast. Or you could just use Google.
5. Invest in indoor workout equipment
Bad weather doesn't have to be an excuse to miss a workout session at home. Buy some equipment. And to keep your skills as a dancer in tiptop condition, set up your own home dance studio. This special area can also be used as your home gym.
6. When it’s safe outside, just walk
During the months of October to March, it can be tempting to drive around when completing errands. That alone is a fact that contributes to weight gain. When there’s no guarantee of extreme weather, why not just walk to your destination and back?
7. Enlist a fitness buddy
Of course, exercising alone is no fun and it could even be more demotivating to stay fit during fall and winter. However, this is also the perfect time to invite your partner, family member, or neighbor to burn those extra fats and calories together. The two best things about having a workout buddy are that you have somebody to challenge and hold accountable for your fitness progress.
8. Never forget hydration
Just because it’s colder doesn’t mean you don’t need to hydrate. Water and other electrolyte drinks are still needed by our cells to metabolize food and burn fat.
9. Swim in a warm pool
Relaxation is a must during the cold seasons. There’s no better way to relieve your body while still doing cardio than swimming in a warm indoor pool.
There are more ways to stay active outdoors during the cold months aside from jogging. You can choose to go ice skating, ice climbing, or skiing. What’s really important is you have the drive to actively seek something to do instead of just staying inside watching TV and eating snacks.
