How to Set-Up Your Dance Studio At Home

Online dance classes are hard especially if you’re taking them in your living room or backyard. There’s a lot of noise and you’ll be rearranging household objects every time your class starts. And since this pandemic isn’t going to be over soon, it would be a good investment to turn a part of your house into a real dance studio. These tips will help you start so you’ll rock the auditions with your honed dance skills.

1. Decide which area to use

Find a part of your home with little to no traffic. It can be the garage, attic, basement, or garden shed. If you live in an apartment, you’ll have no choice but to use your living room or an extra bedroom. Just make sure that the space you choose isn’t frequently used and should be big enough for you to move around.

2. Clear the space

Once you’ve chosen your space, take out all the objects that are not essential to your dancing. You can also rearrange the space as well by putting all the unnecessary items to the side and stacking them up. This will give you more floor space.

3. Lay your home dance studio flooring

It will be hard to practice your chosen dance style on a carpet or concrete because carpets are too rough for slides and spins. Concrete hurts your joints as well. We highly suggest that you choose laminate floors, interlocking rubber mats, tiles, or wood.

4. Put a dance mirror on the wall

Part of improving your dancing is to know how well you perform. In previous articles, we suggest recording yourself via video to check on your progress. But that would require a lot of processes. By dancing in front of a huge wall mirror, you’ll know what you’re doing wrong in real-time.

5. Invest in high-quality speakers

It’s better to dance when you can hear the beat well for movement cues. Don’t settle for a small Bluetooth speaker or your phone’s speaker, use a trolley speaker that’s easy to move with a loud sound. You can also choose a 2.1-inch computer stereo speaker which has a subwoofer.

6. Install proper lighting

Aside from mirrors, LED lighting will illuminate every part of your body for a better view as you practice. Installing 3-5 30w LED bulbs on a track light bar will be the best choice to light up every part of the dance studio. The best part of using a track light is that you can adjust every single bulb to face in any direction of the room.

7. Mount a Smart TV

It would be a hassle to use your phone or laptop when attending online dance classes or following routine instructions. With a smart TV mounted on a bracket swivel at the studio’s corner, all you need to do is cast your device and face to the side of the mirror to mimic the instructor’s movements. Just stay away from opening Netflix during practice sessions.

8. Add your gym kit

If you have extra space after setting up, put your treadmill, elliptical trainer, and stationary bike in the dance studio. You won’t need to go to the gym as the studio will function as a mini fitness center.

9. Finish it up with dance decor

You’re not going to use every wall in your studio for sure. So use these wall spaces to hang your favorite pro cheer posters, dancer portraits, and affirmations. Doing this will bring life, inspiration, and beauty to your studio.

Make your home studio more fun by inviting your workout buddy for a sweat or dance session. They may not be an aspiring pro cheerleader like you but their presence will be a huge help in boosting your motivation!
