How to Stay Physically Active at Home During the COVID-19 Pandemic
The pandemic has postponed audition and pro cheer squad activities. With fewer responsibilities to take care of, why not utilize your time for getting fit and busy? Staying physically active maintains your weight and figure, and helps flush out bacteria from the lungs and airways. Now, let's dive into these tips:
1. Follow an online exercise class
Going to the gym or joining a Zumba class made us used to working out with crowds. Yet, we ignored the fact that the internet exists and there’s a lot of content to explore. Depending on what kind of workout style you want - whether it is bodyweight or flexibility training, find them here.
2. Take short active breaks during the day
After a sweat session, do some active resting activities like cleaning your home or equipment. You can do some light strength training by moving food supplies or rearranging furniture. Before lunch or dinner, you can also prepare ingredients for the dish you’ve planned to cook.
3. Walking around and standing up
Stand up and stretch those sore muscles. Don’t sit or sleep on the couch all day. Walk around inside your home and around the block. Walk up the stairs and back down. If you live in a condo, stroll the hallway and ditch the elevator when moving up and down.
4. Keep on getting busy
Don’t allow yourself to be bored. Always find something to do. Learn a new skill like cross-stitching and knitting. For aspiring pro cheerleaders, practice your public speaking skills. For current squad members, learn a new language.
5. Set an hourly alarm
Sitting down and daydreaming can lead to a nap if you have nothing to do. In between hours, set an alarm reminding you to stand up, stretch, and breathe the air around your home. When the alarm sounds, go back to #3.
6. Eat healthily and stay hydrated
Eating unhealthy food can make one sluggish so have an energizing diet plan. Avoid sugary and fatty food as well as refined and processed foods. Stay away from carbonated drinks. Choose healthier food like veggies, meat, and immune system boosters. Drink a lot of water, including drinks that contain electrolytes.
7. Relax and Meditate
During times of uncertainty and panic induced by the negative news, don’t forget to meditate to keep yourself actively calm. You can also stay physically active while being relaxed by yoga. Balance your daily activities by relaxation as well.
8. Dance to your favorite songs
Aspiring pro cheerleaders - Now‘s the time for you to hone your dance moves! Remember you still have a number to showcase in front of the judges. Haven’t chosen one style or two yet? Find inspirations here!
9. Communicate with relatives and friends
Social distancing makes us miss the people we hold dear in our lives. Never forget to stay in touch with them by using Skype, Facetime, or Messenger. You’ll never notice that you’re already being active by talking and texting with them on the phone. Also, while you’re on a phone call, pace around your home like how you’re pacing around when receiving a call at the office.
Being stuck in our home gives us fewer things to do. That’s because we focus on our daily routines. Now that we live in a different global condition, it’s time to find something else to get busy with. Pro cheer tip: Balance your physical activities with active resting. If you feel tired, relax or take a nap, but make sure to stay active throughout the day.
