How to Workout and Stay Fit While Practicing Social Distancing
The number of COVID-19 infections in the United States has reached 10.1 million. Texas, California, and Florida are the top 3 states with the most infections. Cases will continue to rise unless everyone strictly follows the Center for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.
That means we all should maintain 6 feet away from people that aren’t from our households. We should also disinfect our hands regularly with soap, sanitizers, and wear face masks. But what about us who are living a pro cheer life?
Is there a way for us to go to the gym, exercise outdoors, and stay fit amidst this pandemic? Of course, there is! Just read on.
1. Find a location that’s right for you
Your workout space can be in your home or a place without human congestion. Check if your backyard is conducive to exercising. Find a room to put your workout equipment. Running on a forest trail is good but make sure you have a running buddy.
2. Remain aware of your surroundings
If you do decide to exercise outside, pay attention to other people around you. Maintain the 6-feet distance from people coming your way, those on your side, and those who are behind you. Don’t touch the ground or railings and take a bath after a session especially if you've used shared gym equipment.
3. Take regular breaks
You will wear a mask while you exercise outdoors, which means there’s a chance your oxygen intake will be lower causing you to go dizzy and faint. A mask on your face can also make breathing hard. By taking breaks, you’re ensuring your lungs receive adequate oxygen at all times.
4. Choose a simple workout routine
The more complex your workout routine is, the more you’ll be required to go to the gym. And there are a lot of people in the gym where social distancing is less observed. Do equipment-less exercises instead of workout routines that require gym equipment. Choose from this list:
5. Refrain from making conversations with others while exercising
In the gym, fitness class, or outdoors, there’s a chance you might be conversing with other people while working out. Even if you do follow social distancing, you’ll eventually be subconsciously drawn to each other. As much as possible, focus on your workout instead of talking - you’ll finish your routine and go home earlier.
6. Don’t exercise outdoors if you’re sick
Feeling feverish with cough, colds, and a runny nose? Stay at home. You’ll never know if you’re infected by COVID-19 or not. The best way to curb the spread of the pandemic is to prevent yourself from infecting others, inform a medical professional of your condition, and recover with medication.
7. Focus more on household chores
Minimize your need for outdoor exercises. Clean your home by removing dust from the surface of appliances. Do some furniture rearrangement. Housework is also a form of workout and makes you sweat as you would in the gym.
8. Exercise while watching T.V.
Sometimes it’s better to just stay at home. But being stuck in your own house exposes you to binge-eating and being a couch-potato. Avoid that by maintaining a healthy diet while doing push-ups, squats, or jumping jacks during commercials. Instead of pressing the “Skip Ad” button on YouTube, do a short burst of light exercise until the advertisement is done.
9. Workout during peaceful hours
Early morning is the best period of the day to exercise since staying fit has been a thing. Everyone else is still asleep and no cars are driven making the air fresh from pollution. Do your best to wake up early at 4:30. Sleep as early as possible. Finish your routine before 6:30 am comes.
You should be focused and aware of your surroundings when you’re outside your home. Don’t touch surfaces that other people frequently touch. It is unavoidable to stay 6 feet away from each other during these times. That’s why you should invest in having your own workout equipment instead of going to the gym. This way, you’ll be at a low risk of being infected by the pandemic.
