Now That You Made It, Here Are Tips to Become a Great Dance Team Member

If you think that being an official member of your dream dance team is the end goal of your pro cheer career, think again. Whether you’ve just made it or have been a pro cheerleader for multiple seasons, there’s still a lot of room for improvement and so much to be done as a team member.

So what exactly do you need to become a better (or even great) squad member? Find out by reading on.

1. Dedicate your time on days with team activities

When it’s rehearsal, appearance, game day, or just any day with activities that involve the group, don’t let anything else interrupt your schedule. Focus on fulfilling your role as a team member. By doing so, you’ll have the energy, time, and attention to help yourself and the squad prepare for everything needed for the day.

2. Stay athletic

Spend some of your personal time to train yourself physically. Improve your flexibility, strength, nimbleness, stamina, and endurance even further. Don’t forget to maintain your figure or sculpt your body to the standards of pro cheerleading.

3. Keep on developing your muscle memory for dancing

When you’re not training, dedicate hours to mastering new dance moves and techniques. Practice until you can do them naturally. This will help you develop a fast-learning muscle memory that makes it easy for you to learn your squad choreographer’s new routines for performances.

4. Keep on eating healthily

Accompany your training with a healthy diet. That means avoiding foods that are high in sugar, trans, and saturated fat. Better yet, only eat treats purposefully as cheat meals. Eating healthy foods won’t only make it easier to maintain your figure and weight, but it would also provide you a steady source of high energy for all your pro cheer activities.

5. Foster a deeper friendship with all your squadmates

It’s safe to assume that all your co-dancers are friends. However, it’s better to foster a stronger bond than just normal friendship with them because that, in turn, builds trust which is essential for successful teamwork.

6. Get better at applying the right makeup

Another thing you need to improve on is your skill of putting on the right makeup style for appearances and performances. Some pro cheerleaders make the mistake of applying cosmetics at home and arrive at the stadium with a shiny face due to sweat.

By mastering makeup application, you can do so quickly in locker rooms and appear fresh before entering the field for a performance or photo ops.

7. Help squadmates who struggle

Let’s just assume that some or most of your squadmates lack the guidance to be better pro cheerleaders. Although they have the raw talent to excel in the profession, they still struggle in some areas that you already have found solutions to.

Make it your responsibility to help them with their problems. After all, growing together greatly benefits the team.

8. Stay positive and open-minded

Pro cheerleading may not be a competition of who’s the better athlete and dancer, but it’s a career where only those mentally and emotionally strong will survive. Disappointments, disagreements, stress, you name it. All of these will come your way and challenge your drive. So how do you deal with them? Actively find ways to stay happy and be flexible for whatever happens.
