Pro Cheer Audition Advice: Why Do You Need to Start NOW?

The number one piece of advice that I offer to women who dream to become dancers or professional cheerleaders is to START EARLY. Yes, you need to begin NOW, not tomorrow! And why is that? Well, here's why: Some things take time to achieve.

Many aspects of professional cheerleading require daily practice, work, and commitment on your part. They include:

Your FITNESS LEVEL - Getting fitter takes a lot of time. Working out and eating healthily is not something you do for days or weeks and expect great results. For example, if you want to become more toned and build lean muscle, you need to train consistently for a long time.

Your DANCING - Some women have a natural ability in dancing which helps them learn faster. Other women may not have any experience in dancing, and so they need to undergo training. Whether you think you're a good dancer or not, effort and dedication makes you proficient. It's important that you find a dance studio that teaches dance styles like Arena Dance, Jazz, and Hip-Hop. Broadway and Bellydance work too.

Your SELF-CONFIDENCE - It's impossible to build confidence overnight because confidence comes from the accumulation of successes. If you want to build confidence for the auditions and beyond, make sure that you create small opportunities each day that let you win and celebrate them. A simple example would be committing to a 20-minute fasted cardio at 5:00 am each day and actually doing it.

Your APPEARANCE - Growing out your hair, experimenting with different hair colors, treating acne scars, improving skin imperfections... all of these things take time. Not to mention, you need to study the appearance attributes of the team you're auditioning for. The judges will be able to tell that you took the time and effort research these details.

3 Tips to Get Started

You already know how important early preparation is. This will allow you to look and carry yourself like a true professional cheerleader. It's time to take action. Here are three tips that will help you throughout your preparation journey:

1. Create a plan and routine.

It's not enough to dream that something will happen; you need to execute it. A clear plan of action is key. Make it part of your everyday life. Add it to your calendar. For example, Monday mornings can be dedicated to HIIT workouts while Tuesday mornings can be for strength training. Wednesdays are meant for researching your team.

2. Get all the support you need.

To achieve more, don't do everything alone. Seek advice and feedback from relevant people - for example, a fitness instructor, dance teacher, or a former professional cheerleader! Value the encouragement that you receive from supportive friends and family. Support will help boost your self-esteem and most importantly, motivate you to keep getting better.

3. Step out of your comfort zone.

Instead of moving away from your fears, move TOWARDS them. The things that you're afraid to do are opportunities for growth. The journey to success can feel uncomfortable at times! But the good news is that anything that feels uncomfortable will eventually become comfortable if you stick to it long enough.
