What Are the Best Ways to Store Your Beauty Products?
Cosmetic products are created from a variety of synthetic chemicals. Sometimes, they can be made from organic compounds. Either way, they have expiry dates, and storing them in the wrong place using the wrong methods can speed up the oxidation process.
When cosmetic products undergo rapid oxidation, their expiration process hastens, leading to less potency, and a change in scent, color, and texture. In worse scenarios, applying an oxidized beauty product to your body may cause adverse reactions.
You may have noticed your perfume isn’t smelling as you last recalled, your foundation stinging your skin, and your hair spray not working as it should. As a pro cheer community member, these are huge problems during auditions, game day performances, and community appearances. Therefore, you should avoid them at all costs. Use this list as your guide.
1. Avoid storing your beauty products where they can be exposed to direct sunlight
The very first golden rule of storing your beauty products is to NEVER let them be exposed to sunlight. When cosmetics are heated up by the sun, oxidation, growth of bacteria, and other nasty chemical reactions will take place.
One useful tip to store makeup and skincare products is to keep them in a medicine cabinet with a mirror. You should also hang the cabinet in areas of your room that aren’t warm or hot during the day such as your bathroom. If you store your beauty essentials in a vanity dresser, position the furniture in a way that faces away from your room window.
2. Seal everything properly after using
The second golden rule of proper beauty product storage is to close all lids and seals properly after using. It’s common sense to do so. But, sometimes, you can be guilty of leaving a container open as a result of being in a hurry
While this may seem like a small thing, beauty products exposed to the air promote bacterial growth, especially in cosmetics that are liquid and creamy in texture.
3. Keep the dry cosmetics and tools dry
Powdered beauty products must be stored away from water sources and cosmetics that are cream and liquid in nature. Blush-ons, eyeshadow palettes, and similar makeup should never be near your bathroom sink or be put in a bag that has a moisturizer. The same goes for your comb, hairbrush, makeup brushes, and eyeshadow sponge applicators.
4. Never share your makeup
As selfish as it seems, you should never let another lady use your cosmetics and tools. Sharing mascara and eyeliners is the #1 cause of eye infection in women. You can also say the same for sharing powdered makeup that leads to skin problems.
So if you have a roommate or see someone in need of a beauty product, don’t share their problem. Lock your cosmetics away from prying hands. If you want to lend your makeup because you are a good samaritan, you might as well give it to them.
5. Use drawer dividers to organize your tools
Tools have their own subcategories. Tools come in different sizes, are used for different body parts, and are for wet or dry makeup application. The point is, they should not be lumped together in one container such as a box or drawer. This is where creating a drawer divider becomes important because it prevents cross-contamination and the transfer of moisture.
6. When on the go, make sure your makeup bag stands upright inside your main bag
Beauty products tend to spill when stored upside down. On days you need your cosmetics ready wherever you go such as a game day or pro cheer audition, make sure your makeup bag stands upright as you move.
A good tip is to store the makeup bag on the side pockets of a shoulder bag. You don’t want to open your makeup bag with a horrified face while saying, “Oh no.”
Applying makeup is an important part of the profession. Make sure you have all the beauty products you need whenever you need them. Take care of your tools and makeup by using them properly and storing them in the right place.
